"Suit yourself," Reginald replied amicably. He figured in time the man would be eager for anything to pass the time, and if asked, Reginald would provide. He would not try to force help on the man.
"I suppose it's better here than dead -- which is, apparently, what most had believed happened to me. But yes -- I would much prefer to be with my own family," he went on. "Do you have a boy or girl?" Reginald talked with Simms in the same way he would have anyone else. In all truth he saw no reason not to. What Simms had allegedly done was terrible, and he was being punished. Reginald saw no reason to treat the man like garbage. Even if he himself was disrespected, it could be ignored for a time. He wanted to figure out what to make of the man for himself before he wrote him off.
