Kate couldn't speak for a moment, caught in the grip of such a conflicting storm of emotions that she didn't know which one to feel first, or more, and it was a struggle to contain all of them. "No, you're right," she said after a moment, taking a deep breath. "It's entirely possible I have half-siblings on either parental side that I'm not aware of. Or cousins." Or nieces and nephews, a whole set of family that could have been hers and wasn't as a result of one careless action of her mother's. She hadn't felt deprived with the Valentines, not in the least. She loved her adoptive family as much as anyone could love their own biological one, and she wouldn't have been where she had been in her career if they hadn't broken her out of that shell of anger she'd come to them with, nurtured and encouraged her artistic endeavors, supported her after she moved away to go to school even though they could have written her off if they'd wanted to.
She could have maybe, in time, come to terms with the loss of extended family. But a sister, a twin, was something entirely different.
She cleared her throat then, taking the papers back and replacing them in the desk. "I appreciate you telling me now," she said with honest appreciation. "I imagine it's not going to be any easier tomorrow. I'll help however I can." Even if it was just showing up to lend support. She hoped she wouldn't have to share her story to corroborate or disprove the theory, but if she had to... well, she'd bring the papers to the meeting and deal with that if and when she had to. "Are you all right?" she asked then.
