"It's like that with Oliver and I," Kate said, smiling. "I'm not exactly all that social myself, I'm just polite." She liked being around people, sure, and she had friends she went out with back home, but she didn't have the sort of friends you told deep secrets to. Most people didn't notice really, but no one typically came away from a conversation with Kate knowing a lot more about her family or childhood.
Her smile faded a little when Cecilia asked about siblings. She knew it wasn't an idle question, and she couldn't help but think about the birth certificate stored in her desk. Maybe it was denial, but she'd written it off as a cruel hoax. Surely the state would have mentioned whether or not she had a sibling. There'd been no record. So Kate shook her head 'no'. "I'm adopted," she explained. "I have two non-biological siblings, but as far as I know I don't have any biological ones."
