"It could have been worse," Cecilia repeated, voice softer as she looked down at her hands. "All things considered we were lucky it was something I could treat. Someday we're gonna have something that's beyond me." There had been a few things in the past that had made her realize that, and each time someone else got injured that knowledge became steadier in her brain. Someday they'd be faced with something that was beyond her skill, her ability to treat, and they'd have no choice but to wing it and hope for the best. It was practically a miracle August hadn't inflicted any nerve or muscle damage, because then he would have truly been beyond help.
She smiled softly and looked over at Owen and shrugged. "I probably wouldn't have wanted to leave, anyway. Just in case. This could be worse, too," she added, gesturing to the window. "We're pretty well stocked. Ideally it would have been nice if we'd done a bit more snow preparation, but even if they knock the power out we won't be hurting." And she was under the assumption that they would knock the power out. That was just how they worked.
