"Eight's fine." Juno replied, keeping quiet as Jim talked about Simms and having to visit him; she couldn't help the bitterest scoff when Jim revealed that fucker to be a Catholic. "Oh sure. He's very Old Testament about it, though, not very with the Jesus side of things. I don't ever remember Jesus saying 'go forth and grab that woman then talk about raping her from behind and threaten her friends with bodily harm unless she's a good girl' but then my Bible reading was never very on point."
She did see the gesture Jim made, and it did please her, but Juno didn't smile. If he came at her with forgiveness she was going to squeeze the lemon he had just cut up into his eyes. In silence, Juno took the lemon and squeezed some of its juice into the skillet, which sizzled. The smell was amazing, if she did say so herself. Before adding a little more seasoning, while Jim told the story, Juno grabbed the pack of tortillas from the pantry. Unfortunately she hadn't thought to make them from scratch, and wasn't sure she knew how. Cake? Sure. Cookies? Hell yeah. Tortillas? Ehhh. Not so much. She imagined savory crepes but the texture wasn't quite right.
The longer Jim went on, the colder Juno somehow felt. Her face had gone completely serious, almost reverently so, and she felt a shiver down her back when Jim described Tuneq chasing his wife. At this time, it hit a little close to home despite having nothing at all to do with her own story. She'd be damned if Simms would ever eat her; she'd bite off a piece of him first, God willing. Amen, thought Juno, returning her attention to the story at the bone pile part. The chicken was done, the stove was off, and she had covered the skillet with the plate she'd used before for the chicken. Now, she had turned around and stood there against the counter right next to the stove, listening intently.
Once he was done Juno let a heavy silence fall between them during which only the noise of her torso moving with another shiver could be heard. "You've, uh,-" she cleared her throat. "You've been to some pretty metal places, Jim."
