Kate's whole body tensed when he pulled, doing her best to counter the instinct to jerk away and to make any noise. She was more successful with the second; the only sound from her was a short, sharp inhale as her clawed fingers dug into the carpet, leg tensing in his grip as if to counter the instinctive jerking away. The feeling of the metal being slowly pulled out of her flesh sent a wave of hot prickling from her scalp down her spine and she closed her eyes, remembering that exhaling was also an important part of the breathing process.
She appreciated having something else to focus on when he asked about the first aid kit and she nodded, managing actual words on her second attempt. "Cabinet under the sink. Right side." Though she knew Cecilia had stocked common areas with medical supplies, she was glad she'd also grabbed one of the ones Oliver had made. She wasn't watching Owen's progress anymore; focusing her attention inward was a childhood trick she'd learned when crying didn't do anything except make things worse. The first caltrop came free accompanied by a long, slow exhale, though she didn't fully relax. It hurt less, thankfully, but there were still two more to go.
