Jack wasn't certain why he was surprised to hear a response, exactly. He got the feeling this place was huge, so people made sense, right? And he'd been the asshole shouting into the hall expecting somebody to pop out of the woodwork, hadn't he? At least this meant he wouldn't have to stand around for any extended period of time, shouting to no one and chattering out loud about it like some fucking lunatic.
She hadn't heard him talking to himself, had she?
What wasn't really a surprise was that the first thought that entered his head upon seeing her was that the situation was looking up already. Pretty girls were always a bonus, and blondes were almost as good as redheads. Nor was it odd that the second thought was the hope that a hot Asian chick in a schoolgirl outfit would magically appear next. After all, this was how most of his favorite dreams started. The uniform was almost disappointingly unsexy though.
The third, however, was realizing that his surprisingly-surprising company actually seemed to be having a little trouble getting around. Whatever smartass reply had been on the tip of his tongue was drowned out as he took a tentative step forward, his brow furrowing a little in minor concern. "Uh, I'm Jack, but I haven't figured that other thing out yet. You doin' okay?" He reached his hands out a few inches, palms up to show he meant no offense or harm, wouldn't touch if she didn't want, but available if she actually needed help. He'd lived in the city long enough to know that it never, ever hurt to be too careful on either end of an interaction like this. "You need to sit down or something?"
