Who: Justin and Charlie When: Monday after school Where: NH animal shelter What: Justin and Charlie and some miscommunication.
The bake sale had been a success. All in all they had collected two hundred and fifty dollars, the sum of which Justin rounded up with a fifty dollar contribution of his own. It was for a good cause really, Justin was a fan of all the little animals. After school on Monday, he had driven Charlie and the money over to NH's only animal shelter. As usual Charlie was bouncing and babbling and as usual Justin tolerated it with his own brand of patience.
Charlie had simply jumped out of the car before he even had a chance to park it. And, as Justin followed him inside, Charlie was already chatting away with the girl at the front desk. Zener this and Zener that and don't listen to that reporter from the NYT because evil psychics don't donate to shelthers and help animals in need. The people at the shelter looked amused and so did Justin. After surrending Clair's chick shaped hair clip tin, with the money inside, they made their way out again. But not before Charlie said,
"Do you think we'll make the local papers? It's not much but I hope we do. Good press and everything." He was still bouncing. Justin's reply had been. "It's ok if we don't though...at least we've helped all the animals inside." His words seemed to make Charlie light right up.
"Oooo Oooo!" He was making Justin wonder if it was possible if Clair had infected him somehow. Charlie was not usually this bouncy. "Dude, you totally reminded me that they said we could adopt one animal. The girl at the desk was talking about it before you came in. So what do you want?" Or maybe he had overdosed on the coffee.
Justin simply wished he had time to think about this. Getting a pet was a big thing. "Well..." The rest of his sentance was drowned out as a truck rattled past and before he could stop the other boy Charlie was bouncing away into the shelter again. Shaking his head, Justin went back to the car.
Bad move. He was instantly suspicious when Charlie came out again carrying a rather large box. It had holes on it's sides and the thing moving inside certainly did not look feline. "Ta-da!" Charlie said as he opened the lid with a flourish. Justin looked inside and paled.
