Log & Thread: Rye & River
Who: Rye Redwood and River Simmons When: December 28, backdated Where: Outside of school, mall What: Shopping, oh joy.
River had said he'd found them a car and to meet him at the front doors of the school, so that's where Rye was currently leaning against the building, bundled up in a black coat, dark green scarf and gloves, his red and white walking stick in one hand. At the moment, said walking stick was tapping against the ground rhythmically, though he wasn't going anywhere until River came. He wondered if it was Justin that lent him a car or not. He snickered at the thought of the boy schmoozing his girlfriend's brother for it and hoped he didn't have to owe him anything for it.
River had to do some sweet talking to get Justin's car, but he was surprised that the other boy had said yes so easily. Justin and River weren't the best of friends but they where at least attempting to be civil on Clair's behalf. River was bundled up in his coat when he finally made his way to the front of the school, twirling the car keys to the volvo in his hand and whistling softly to himself. He paused as he came up to Rye waiting there. "Well don't you look all cute....going somewhere special?"
The sound of those keys and River's footsteps had Rye already pushing away from the wall before the other spoke. He snorted and pointed the walking stick at the longer haired boy, "Oh yeah, out with you, hot stuff. Just don't tell Clair, huh?"
River laughed softly as he headed down the stairs, sure Rye would follow him. He wasn't about to offer help because he knew Rye didn't need it, and wouldn't take it anyway. "I should be the one worried if Clair found out." He glanced over his shoulder at Rye, "That girl is scary when she is mad."
The walking stick's tip dropped to the ground in front of him to find the first step as he followed him down them, "I bet. She has to put up with you, you realize. She beat on you? There's groups for that, you know." He snickered as he followed him, hoping the boy doesn't ask about the blind stick.
River snorted a laugh as he made his way to Justin's car. " Hey, she puts up with me willingly....nobody makes her. She must be a glutton for punishment, or I am just that awesome." They made their way to Justin's car and River pushed the little unlock button on the keyring, of course the boy would have a car with all the features.
"Oh sure, awesome. How about we go with the former rather than the latter?" Rye paused as he heard the car horn that signaled the doors had unlocked. He didn't know which car it had come from, so he made sure River had started to open the car door before he moved to the other side of the car to find the handle on his own door and get in with him, "To downtown, Jeeves. A game store of some sort."
River only shook his head before he got in to the driver's side of the car. He waited for Rye to join him before he continued their conversation. "You like the idea of my girlfriend beating on me? That's messed up man." River slipped his seat belt in to place before he put the keys in and started the car up. He had been itching to drive Justin's volvo ever since they had borrowed it for the double date with Charlie and Kiku. "Yes sir, right away sir." He smirked and put the car into gear and headed out of the school parking lot.
"Good man, Jeeves." Rye snickered and leaned back in the seat after buckling his belt. The walking stick settled between his legs on the floor and against the seat, "And no, I don't like the idea of Clair beating you up. I'd like to think you have a few more balls than that, River."
Pulling the car out on to the street River made sure to watch for oncoming cars. He wasn't about to get the shiny volvo dinged up because over protective Justin would never let him forget it. So yeah River was driving a bit cautiously but he felt he had a good reason to be. "Good, I was going to say you had some sick sense of what is fun if you thought that was a good idea."
Rye leaned his head back on the headrest of his seat, twirling the thin cane in his hands, "Nah, beating on people isn't fun. Though I'd have to say there's a few here I'd love to punch. At least once." He smiled just a bit at the thought of popping Vaughan one in the face, and then maybe Iggy.
"Yeah...there are some people who need a good thumping." River had to resist not snarling as he thought back to the fight he had with Justin. It was an absurd fight that shouldn't have happened but River wasn't about to let the other boy get away with treating Clair like a child. Not to mention River felt he wasn't in the wrong at all, he had after all only defended himself. "So why are we going into town again?" River knew where they were going since Rye had told him when they got in the car...but Rye didn't strike him as the type to buy gifts for anybody.
Rye turned his head towards the other a bit, hearing that tone in his voice. So little River had some problems here, too, huh? River seemed the type to get along with most if not all students here at the school. Interesting to know he had some enemies as well. He looked back up at the ceiling again, "I'm getting something for Iggy. Sort of a peace offering, I guess. I'm sick of getting detentions and such for fighting with him, so hopefully this'll help." The tip of the cane tapped against the carpet on the floor by his feet.
River quirked an eyebrow, resisting a snorted laugh because it wasn't such a bad idea. "Maybe I should do that for Justin." He shook his head liking the idea more and more as he thought about it. It was hard for he and Clair to get alone time with each other because of her brother and River was frankly getting sick of it. Though the fact that Justin allowed him to use the car was definitely a step in the right direction.
"Yeah? If you wanna go to another store as well, I don't care. What would you get him?" He pulled on the seat belt a bit, pulling it away from his neck, where it always seemed to want to choke him.
River turned the car down the street he knew the mall was down, he had only been there a few times but the town wasn't so large for one to get lost. "No clue," he shrugged before continuing. "Maybe a girlfriend so he leaves me alone?" River chuckled softly to himself as he thought of the idea.
Rye snorted, "Sorry, can't help you there. The only girl I really know in this school is Minnie, and that's because she seems to be the only one not really scared of me. For some reason." He lifted a hand to swipe his hair from the bandanna and his forehead.
"Damn. Well I guess I will just have to deal with him. At least he isn't trying to kick my ass anymore." River pulled the car in to the mall parking lot then, weaving his way around other vehicles as he attempted to find a parking spot. "Hey...you don't happen to have one of those handicap things do you? We could get prime parking if you did." River had meant it as a joke and hoped that Rye wouldn't take offense to it.
Rye chuckled at the thought of Justin trying to beat River up. It just all seemed so amusing! His hand dropped from his hair and reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out the blue and white plastic hanger that River coveted, "Oh, you mean this? Nah, I don't have one of those. You think I'm some sort of cripple?" He wiggled it enough to make it bend back and forth, keeping it out of Rivers reach for now.
River almost sighed, relieved that Rye hadn't taken offense to his comment. He knew the boy was touchy about his ability and the fact that people thought he was a cripple because of it. " No I didn't mean that. But since you don't have one I guess I will just have to park as far as I can away from the mall to get a good spot." River made a jerk of the wheel pretending he was turning the car sharply while he was actually pulling them in to one of those prime handicap spots he was talking about.
"Don't you dare, River. You can't make a blind boy walk too far." He reached up to hook the little plastic sign onto the rear view mirror, "So take us to a good spot. Or else." He settled in his seat again, even as the car stopped. He knew the mall building was close enough for this to be one of those good spots. Hopefully River would turn off the car.
River laughed as he cut the engine on the car, pulling the keys from the ignition. "And what if I did? You going to kick my as?" River laughed again to make sure Rye knew he was joking and really had no desire to fight him.
Rye unclicked his seat belt with a snort, "No, I'd tell Justin you molested Clair. He can beat you up, then." He grinned as he opened the car door and climbed out, the walking stick finding the ground before him.
River opened the car door and followed Rye. "He can try to beat me up. I kicked his ass last time." It was actually a rather fair fight, but River wasn't about to admit that.
"Yeah? You're pretty tough, huh?" Or so he thinks. He closed the car door and turned to go around the car, the stick sweeping the ground in front of him, pushing snow and slush around more than helping him find his way, "By the by, out here in public, treat me like a blind boy. I hate people asking questions."
"No not tough," River didn't really talk about or think of himself that way. But he wasn't a push over. Justin had started a fight and he wasn't one to back down and be labeled a pansy or something. "Sounds like a good plan."
Rye stayed a bit behind River as they moved towards the mall entrance, the stick still moving in front of him. It tapped the curb before he stepped up onto it to get to the doors, "You know where the store is, or do we wander around?"
River almost rolled his eyes at Rye's question as they made their way to the doors. " Yeah I know where the store is... with Clair as my girlfriend I better know this mall like the back of my hand."
"Oh lord, she's one of -those-?? I hate those girls. Really feel sorry for you." He moved towards the doors with him, waiting for River to open the door and let him in. He's blind, you know, can't see the doors.
River shrugged before he got the door for Rye, pulling it open and letting the other boy in before him. "She isn't all that bad. You get past all the crazy shopping things and she is pretty cool."
He stepped in through the door, his other hand sliding along the door frame as if he couldn't see it. He's good at pretending like this. He turned his head back towards River a bit, "You're biased, man. Of course you think she's cool. Now which way? And do you know what World of Warcraft is?"
"Of course I am biased. She is my girlfriend." River let the door close behind him as he caught up with Rye. "Left. And yes, I know what World of Warcraft is. Why do you ask?"
Rye shook his head a little at the biased comments from River, smiling at the poor boy's 'stupidity' in his opinion, of getting so caught up in another person. Love is overrated. He turned left, though and reached a hand to hold onto River's upper arm. Yes, he could see all the people swirling around them, but he'd rather have someone to hold onto than navigate them all himself. This was worse than the hallways at school between classes, "Because I want to get a poster of it for Iggy. It has to be his favorite race and or .... class is it? Profession? I dunno, I've never seen the game, obviously. But he plays enough of it in the room that I know those things at least."
"And so you asked me here so I can do the shopping for you?" River glanced down on Rye's hand as it rested on his shoulder, seeing it as part of the whole image for the blind kid who needs help moving about the mall. He didn't think that he was really lost or lovesick about Clair, but then again River's indeed was a biased opinion. But had you told River a few months ago that he was going to be in a relationship with one such as Clair he would have laughed right in your face. Then again life works in mysterious ways.
"Sorta... I guess?" Rye wrinkled his nose a bit, "Well when you put it that way, I sound horrible. Really, you're here to make sure I buy the right thing, that's all." His fingers were light on the boy's upper arm, not one to cling or touch all too often, even when it's needed.
"I was kidding man. I have no problem helping you out." Rye wasn't so bad of a guy when you took the time to get to know him. But unfortunately most people never gave him the chance.
"Oh... good." Rye shrugged a bit, tapping the stick on the ground as it swiped in front of him, now and then catching on someone's foot and tripping them just a tad. Was he trying to do that? Who knows.
River smirked a little as he watched somebody trip over Rye's stick. He waited until the person was out of ear shot before he spoke. "Nice... that one almost spilled their soda." He glanced at Rye at his side as they made their way through the crowded mall.
Rye snickered before he cleared his throat, "Now who said I was trying to do that?" He grinned at River, the white and red stick this time swiping in front of his friend instead, "You think I'm that mean? I'm touched, really."
"Touched? As in insulted? Or touched that I would think so highly of you?" River watched the cane sweep in front of his feet but didn't stumble on it like others did. Though if River stumbled Rye would probably stumble with him.
The walking stick moved back in front of himself, doing small sweeps for now like any normal blind person. His shit-eating grin spoke volumes for River, "Touched you'd think so highly of me, of course. But I'm glad you're amused. It's the least I could do."
River shook his head at the grin on Rye's face. It was actually very amusing watching Rye use his shortcomings or rather abilities to mess with people.
Rye was still smiling, amused that River was amused. Perhaps he'd underestimated the boy. He stayed silent, tripping up two more people before they reached the correct store. None of the trip-ees ever said a bad word to the 'cripple' and one woman even apologized profusely for tripping -him- up. Sometimes it was good to be blind. Rye stepped into the gaming store and nudged River, "Flag someone down, will ya? Unless you see where the posters are?"
River had to resist snickering as Rye tripped a few other people. Rolling his eyes as they entered the store, "I'm not completely incompetent. They are over there." He started to gesture before he remembered who he was leading. "Over in the corner.
"Well, then lead the way, my man." Rye gestured forward with the walking stick, telling him the race and class of his roommate's favorite character. Not that he knew what any of it really meant.
River nodded and walked off into the game store, Rye's hand on his arm. He led the other boy off in to the corner where there was a set up a display of Warcraft posters. Raising an eyebrow River looked over them all before spotting the one Rye need. "So what would you say if I told you they didn't have what you needed?"
"Then I'd say we have to scour this entire mall until we find one. You wouldn't want to do that, now would you?" Rye gave him a stern look and pinched at the back of his upper arm.
River flinched at the pinch, "Ouch....don't do that or I'll leave you here!" He laughed softly and reached out pulling out the poster that Rye needed. "Damn...can't take a joke can you?"
"Bah, I'd get a free ride home. I'm a cripple, remember. So you found one, I take it? Does it come with a way to hang it? Otherwise, I think there's tape in the dorm room somewhere." He turned his hand again to simply hold onto River's arm again as his other hand dug out his wallet from his back pocket.
"Man being cripple has so many benefits. And yes I have it. I think you will have to use tape, though,” River rolled his eyes at Rye as he pulled the poster out of the display and waited for the other boy to get out his money.
"You uhmm... you'll have to tell me which bill to give the cashier person." He turned towards the sounds of the registers and tugged River along with him, forgetting for the moment that he was supposed to be leading.
"Oh? Can't figure that out? " River liked teasing Rye because he knew the the boy wouldn't take offense to it. Though his statements where a little guarded as he didn't want to step over the line.
"Yeah, you know, 'cuz the fact that I'm BLIND means I can't do math. Jackass." The swear made one little girl gasp and point at him, "Meanie!" Rye stuck his tongue out at her as they passed, just as childish as she, to get into line for the registers.
