Yikes, I'm glad you didn't actually take your fingers off--talk about suffering for your art!
I hadn't consciously made the connection, but you're right - it's a canonical blind spot, even, what with his not taking Katou's jealousy seriously. (I need to revisit that scene, because it still makes my brain itch -- the first time I read it, I thought it was a dick move on Y's part, and trying to reconcile that with how both Iwaki and Katou trust and confide in him -- well, it's still making my brain itch, now that I'm remembering it.
It does seem kinda like a dick move, but OTOH, Yoshizumi hasn't seen any evidence so far of Katou's alleged jealousy, so it probably seems like a harmless enough prank to him. (Of course, I can see the homicide-inducing prank in "Present Understanding" starting off this way, too...) It's interesting that despite this, Katou seems to instinctively sense that Yoshizumi is an okay guy, perhaps in the same way that he intuits that Onozuka is a good guy despite his scheming and cutting-bordering-on-mean remarks--or the way he immediately senses that Asano is up to no good when Asano hasn't actually done anything yet.
Hmm, maybe one could view the prank not so much as trying to stir up trouble, but as Yoshizumi trying to puzzle out Iwaki and Katou's relationship. Iwaki keeps claiming that Katou is extremely jealous, and yet Katou doesn't act jealous in front of Y, so Y is sort of conducting an experiment to see if Katou really does get jealous or if Iwaki is just oversensitive? (Without, perhaps, fully considering the consequences of what might happen if Katou did go beserk with jealousy.)
(That, and Yoshizumi's comments about his own masculine pride. Which could be an argument for him being canonically gay? *need more coffee, need to go back and revisit that volume in both English and French*)
That makes me grin, although I think the argument can be made either way. I've known straight guys who were worried that if there were a gay guy in their workplace/gym locker room/whatever that he might ogle or make a pass at them, like they're assuming that the hypothetical gay guy won't be able to keep his hands off them, and I'm thinking, "Dude, you are not that irresistible!" and that they'd probably be a little offended as well as relieved that the gay guy probably couldn't care less about them. ~_^
