Hartley was not only a social activist these days, but he loved to give back to the community with little things like volunteering to play at a local street fair with a small impromptu band to attract the attention of both local and visitors to the plight of a community school for the arts. He knew the importance of having an arts and music program to keep kids off the streets and clean of drugs and other social ills. Although the rate of petty crime in Central City was nothing when compared to places like Gotham, and even Metropolis, it was still a problem. Hartley was aware of the use of these programs that kept children off the streets and away from the many temptations of modern life. A healthier society, he reasoned, bred more successful individuals.
He felt a little guilty thrill. More successful individuals were good for the quality of life of the city as a whole, but it also translated into more and better loot for himself in the long term. Having his flute in hand made his hands itch for a little adventure. But this was his regular flute, not his tricked out one that The Pied Piper used to steal from the rich and give to the poor (after taking a margin of profit, of course). Surely he could do simple stuff with any flute if he wanted, but here he didn't need to hypnotize anyone. All he needed was for people to come by and pledge to the school fund.
He finished his set to much applause, which he acknowledge with a fancy bow, and went over to the refreshment table. He was parched, so he grabbed a vitamin water, since they had no beer at the street fair. He dropped onto a nearby bench, his flute case perched against the seat between his legs, and waved and smiled at the people who had seen him play, basking in the recognition. If they only knew.
