Whoever said "It doesn't matter if you win or lose" was obviously someone who never lost something that mattered in real and was clearly not a crime fighter.
All Jade could manage, due to the pain in her shoulder and the sinking feeling in her stomach, was pull herself up onto her knees. She let her head sag as she scrubbed the back of it, before raking her hands back through her hair. She was pooped and it wouldn't be until she got her second (third or forth) wind that she'd be able to assist Roy any further. Although, at the moment, it seemed like there wasn't much fighting to be done after the cop car exploded.
She knew she couldn't just sit there like a dumb ass and with a sigh and a groan, finally stood. She closed the distance to where Roy stood, feeling a little more than lost in all of this. "We're probably going to have to talk to them, huh?" She asked, referring to the cops. It seemed like the right thing to do, but Jennie-Lynn was still so very new at this, she couldn't help but to defer to Roy and his judgment.
"Yeah," Roy begrudgingly agreed, "but they already figured out she got away." He felt like kicking at the grass or stomping off angrily but Roy had refrained. Instead, he had helped evacuate the area and gave an account of the situation-- at least to some extent. Green Arrow had allegedly gone out the back and gone after the thief. Ollie was going to kill him when he got wind of this. (At least that's what Roy assumed.)
For the moment, however, Roy had a reprieve. And so did Jade. He paused and gave her a once over. "You okay?" Ambulances had pulled into the driveway. He wasn't sure if they could do much for her (or anything at all considering she was green) but it was best to offer.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She did not want or need medical attention. The sooner the cops and the ambulances left the better Jennie would feel. And despite the gravity of the situation, her mouth twitched upward into a bit of a grin. She wondered what would land her in more trouble, be caught with a fake I.D. or being found out as a vigilante. Roy seemed to have things covered though. And once he was finished speaking with one of the officers, she motioned him over.
"Hey, what...what was it, what did you say she was trying to steal? Um, those over there?" Jade had wandered around the inside, pacing, when she had caught site of the scrolls laying off to the side.
"Some scrolls or something?" Roy responded, picking his way through the debris to see where Jade was pointing. "Looks like," he said, eyes widening. Maybe the night wasn't a complete bust after all. He motioned one of the officers over then headed for the empty display case.
She had grabbed a bunch of something. The little note card was probably still intact. In fact, it was probably one of the areas of the library that was. "How many do you see?" he called down to Jade.
Jade poked around, sifting through a pile of broken tile. A quick breath blew a layer of dust that had covered the delicate paper. She didn't want to disturb them too much - who even knew how old these were? Which raised the question of why they were important and why that girl was after them.
Standing to her full height and she began closing the distance. "There's three... two and a half..." she called up the stairs. Without knowing how many were taking or of what, she didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
While poking through the debris she had come across Roy's hat. Thinking that he'd probably like to have it back. She had dusted off the chalk and crisped the sides to give it back its shape. "Here," she said, offering it back to him with her arm outstretched as she approached.
Roy blinked behind his domino mask. He faltered for a moment. "Thanks," he said, surprised and easily took his hat from Jade. He nodded towards her then pointed towards the empty display case, still surrounded by shattered glass.
"There were four," he explained. Their pink haired nemesis still had one.
She nodded off his thanks, already moving on to inspect the case. She circled around it and blew off the dust to inspect the brass plaque. "Just the name," she informed Roy. Jennie stored the information for later, her curiosity growing. "I wonder why they were so important," she muttered. More information was required to figure out this little puzzle. She was definitely going to have to look this up later.
Jennie returned her attention once more to Roy. "Oh," she started. She was replaying the events in her head, recalling something from earlier she thought was maybe worth mentioning. "You're pretty handy with that," she nodded towards the bow. "I guess you've done this sort of thing before."
"Part of the job." Roy turned back to the plaque. "I say we ask her," he said . "She can't have gone far." There wasn't much they could do around here. The police had the remains of the situation well in hand. "You up for it?"
Jade wasn't sure that was necessarily a good idea, she kind of needed to get back to her school. But since her curfew had already been so completely blown that another hour or two would hardly make a difference. Truth be told, having GL-esque powers had made sneaking in and out of the school much easier. No more hiding ladders or escaping down trelaces, planning out routes or waiting for those serendipitous moments when someone would forget to close a window, not when you could just fly up to the roof of your dorm.
"Sure. I kind of want to get out of here anyways."
"One platform coming up?" Roy questioned. It was practically second nature for Hal. He assumed it would be for Jade as well.
Jade and Roy exchanged glances before she realized he was looking at her expectantly. He may have noticed that Hal Jordan, she was not.
"Platform. Okay, um..." She splayed her birthmark enhanced hand, a halo of green light surrounding her as well as creating a floating disc for Roy. "Alright, hop on and lets hope it holds," she said with a hint of a smirk.
Jade lifted herself into the air, taking Speedy along for the ride, as they made their quick ascent through the busted window and out of the building.
Speedy pointed towards the direction Jinx had been headed and then let Jade take over. How hard would it be to find a girl with bright pink hair. The first minute passed in silence, then Roy glanced towards Jade, surreptitiously looking at her hands, noting the lack of a ring.
"Can I ask you a question?" he ventured.
Jennie was focused solely on searching the terrain for Pinkie, scanning the lush Japanese gardens for any sign and not dropping Roy that it took her a minute to respond.
"Yeah, sure." She couldn't even fathom what he wanted to ask.
"You're the same girl that ran into," there was a slight pause, "Green Lantern right?"
She gave Roy a glance over her shoulder before answering, returning her attention to what was in front of her. Ran into him...she remembered it happening the other way around.
"Yeah, that's me," wondering what he was getting at.
Roy didn't respond for a moment, waiting for her to elaborate on the situation. He had already heard Hal's side of it and it couldn't have been a common place occurrence for her. "And?" he prompted.
"And what? What do you want to know? It was really strange. And you know, the news got it wrong. But that's probably for the best." Her shoulders rolled upwards into a shrug. What had irked her was the fact they called her his sidekick.
"Are you a Green Lantern?" Roy asked. She didn't have the ring and Hal was pretty insistent about it, but to see her in action, she definitely had the green glow. "Oh, wait, head east," Roy said, pointing off in the correct direction.
"One ring to rule them all," said, a little worn out from subject. Hal had been insistent. But before she got into it with Roy, she gave a nod and arced off in the direction he pointed. "Do you see something?"
Roy shook his head. "She couldn't have gotten this far on foot that quickly." Presumably she was on foot. If Jinx had boosted a car, they were in for a long night. "Yeah, I noticed the ring." Or lack thereof. "Then you're not?"
"Yeah, I don't have any GL bling." Jennie held her fists together, [GANGSA-4-LIFE] written across knuckle ring constructs. "Apparently, that's an important part of it."
"Then this thing I'm standing on...?" Roy ventured, because, literally, from where he was standing, he begged to differ.
"I don't have a ring. That thing your standing on is all me. I don't understand it and I don't think Green Lantern did either. There is no spoon," she said, bringing them closer to the ground to get a better look around.
"Lab accident?" Roy offered, "or metahuman?"
Jennie snorted in his general direction. "Definitely not a lab accident. Pretty sure, meta, I don't know for sure though."
"That sucks."
She glanced over again, "Why do you say that?"
Roy was thrown off guard. It had been a way of expressing acknowledgment and maybe a bit understand. "Because you don't know?" he tried to explain. Okay, now it just sound stupid to say it like that.
"Oh, uh...thanks." For the first time all evening her mouth twitched upwards into a sort of smile. "The only thing that sucks though is not knowing how I can do all this stuff."
"Willpower," Roy explained without missing a beat. "Trust me."
Jade gave him an incredulous look. "But where did this power come from? That's the question."
Roy was at a loss there. He shrugged. "You should probably talk to G.L. about that. You want me to let him know you're looking for him?"
"Wait a second. What?" Jade turned on her axis and halted the disc Roy was standing on. "You know Green Lantern?"
Roy looked to the left, then to the right, and braced for some sort of outburst. "Yeah?" he offered.
"I feel so out of the loop." To his question, Jennie shrugged again. "Like I said, he didn't have a lot to say to me. And I don't really have a lot to say to him at the moment. So...that's that."
"Sorry," said Roy noncommittally. Part of him wanted to ask if she had done anything to get on Hal's bad side and part of him wanted to defend Hal because really, Hal was a good guy when you got down too it. However, the last thing Roy wanted was to get into an argument with the girl that was currently keeping him aloft.
"Why are you sorry? Its kind of an ideal situation..." The way Jennie-Lynn saw it.
"Fine then," Roy held up his hands in acquiesce. "Have it your way." If she didn't have a problem with it then neither did he. And clearly Hal didn't either. "We should head south again."
"Ha. I will. Alright, one more pass," she agreed, "But then I have to go. My curfew was about four hours ago."
Roy paused from scanning the streets. He did a double take towards Jade. "Curfew?" Now that was a foreign concept if Roy ever heard of one.
"Yeah," she admitted, also unimpressed by the concept. "And if I get caught I am dead. D-E-A-D."
"Would you mind dropping me by the Baja Fresh on Main? I parked near there." If they hadn't found Jinx by now it wasn't likely. Surely the reporters had hit up the library and the clubbers had probably heard that Green Lantern was floating around the city. It wasn't exactly the best way to end the night but no one could say that Jade and Speedy hadn't given it their best effort.
"Yeah, sure, why not," she said, not mentioning that was very near where she had parked her own car.
It only took a few more minutes for them to reach the downtown area. All the lights were dark and Roy realized he'd have to find a 24-hour drive through somewhere. When they arrived at the garage, Roy stepped off the platform and lingered for a moment.
After a moments deliberation about how to say goodbye, she just decided on a simple, "Alright, see ya." And began to rise into the air again.
"Hey wait," Roy called after her. He waited until she had paused before asking his next question. "What's your name?"
Jennie stopped her upward climb when he called out. "You can call me Jade. What's yours?" She shouted back.
"Speedy!" he shouted back. He watched as she flew off then lingered a moment more before turning to go inside. "I guess I'll see you around."
