Though she should have been fast asleep, Kitty had stayed up to engage in some late-night studying. She'd mostly gotten over the disappointment of the letter from home, but hard feelings still lingered, and anyway, she needed to stay up-to-date on the lessons. There was no excuse for poor grades. Not that I don't already know the material, she mused as she settled the textbook onto the bed. Which means that I can probably get away with grabbing a bite to eat. Plus, it's Friday. There was absolutely no argument there.
Almost effortlessly she allowed herself to become intangible, passing through the bed and then the wall so as not to cause a creak or groan.
In no hurry, Kitty lingered as she walked from the dorm to the kitchen. The night was relatively pleasant, so she found herself gazing at the stars overhead for a few moments before returning to her mission. I wonder if there are any leftovers. I'm not really in the mood to cook something. Spaghetti sounds nice, but I don't think we've had any this week. Maybe there's some meatloaf and a salad. The thought caused a smile to spread. I don't think they'd appreciate me trying to have a ten course meal in the middle of the night.
When her stomach finally rumbled, she quickened her pace. The gap between the main building and student dormitory finally came to a close, and she, once again, phased through the wall.
Initially, her mind was so concentrated on a snack that she didn't noticed Jay at all. Earlier, doughnuts had been placed oh-so-nicely on a counter, opposite of where Jay was currently sitting, which she'd seen when she had stopped by for a drink. As Kitty entered the room, she turned sharply to her right. I wonder if I'll get lucky. There were still a couple left earlier. Sadly, it seemed like they'd all been devoured.
With a sigh, Kitty turned on her feet, now opting to search the fridge. It was only when she absently swept the rest of the room with her eyes that she became aware of his presence. Frankly, it shocked her. "Hey," she blurted, staring at him for a second. However, she soon realized that her reaction was likely to intensify the awkwardness sure to follow, and so she moved on, bearing a broader smile. "Apparently, great minds think alike. Did you also want doughnuts?" Even though Kitty was confident that she could divert any possible conversation away from something awkward, she didn't know if she could pull off the same trick with her eyes. So, in an attempt to be curtious and not weird, Kitty finished crossing over to the fridge so that she could open and look inside.
