Who: Rogue and Gambit
When: In the AM, August 30th
Where: Rogue's dorm room.
What: Happy birthday to Rogue.
Ratings & Warnings: None. It's just damn sweet.
Rogue had gone to bed just before midnight with the attention of falling right to sleep and sleeping through as much of August 30th as she possibly could. Of course this was a pipe dream; she had never been the most peaceful sleeper and that night was no exception. It took what seemed like hours of tossing and turning before she realised that sleep just wasn't coming and gave up trying to force it.
It was early in the AM and still dark as Rogue pushed the covers back and sat up in her bed. She glanced over in the direction of the closet, considering changing from her long, hooded night gown but then realised that that would entail passing Kitty's empty bed and she didn't want to do that. She had been hoping that her friend would be back soon as she missed her a whole lot.
Without switching her light on, something comeplled Rogue to head for the door. Maybe it was the allure of the kitchen; she was always up for a nice snack. She opened the door, squinting as her eyes slowly adjusted to the bright light of the empty hallway, and then her eyes came upon something on the floor just outside her room. A package and an envelope sat innocently on the carpet, obviously delivered there at some point. Rolling her eyes a little at their "magical" appearance she scooped them up and stepped back into her room, shutting the door firmly behind her.
Back in her almost pitch black haven, she sat down on her unmade bed and reached for the flashlight that she always kept on her bedside table. "Thanks, Mama," she whispered sarcastically upon illuminating the envelope, identifying the hand that had printed the address as that of Priscilla D'Ancanto. Carelessly she tossed the unopened envelope in the direction of her desk, paying no attention to the fact that it fell considerably short. She didn't need to open it to know that inside there'd be a generic birthday card with an equally generic "love mama and papa" message and probably a crumped $20 note too. That overwhelming specialness could wait.
The card out of sight and out of mind, she flashed the light onto the package, instantly recognising Logan's writing. A small smile came to her face as she tore open the paper of her only real birthday present. She shook the package, a pair of long gloves falling onto her lap, the finest satin in her favourite emerald green. Glancing at the postmark, she remembered reading that long gloves were all the rage in Japan that season. She'd considered moving there so that the gloves she wore on a daily basis didn't look so out of place. Her smile turning bitter, she put the gloves aside. Any other day she would have loved them but that day they just reminded her of everything she couldn't have.
With nothing else to do and no option for sleep she clicked her flashlight off, her eyes moving aimlessly over the dark room. She knew Xavier would seek her out to wish her a happy birthday a some point but the thought didn't comfort her. She hadn't felt so alone in some time. Her voice little more a whisper, she began to sing softly to herself. "Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear Marie, happy birthday to me."
