If there were anything more imposing than a man, it would be his office. Books meticulously lined, hand-written letters and notes in plain view, a tempting locked drawer – but not yet. She couldn’t snoop; Xavier had promised that with a man like Shaw, after the months or years that it would take to gain his trust, she couldn’t lose it. In time, the locked drawer, private rooms, his real accounts would be given rather than taken. Until then, she would be the dutiful secretary. And this was just another one of the dutiful secretary’s tasks.
Breaking her stride just the slightest bit to show hesitation reflective of the amount of respect she had – or should have – upon entering his study, she placed her hand on the knob of Shaw’s study, knocked for appearance’s sake, knowing he wasn’t inside but never knowing who was watching, and pushed it open. She had been inside before, several times on the man’s heels, but never alone and without express permission. While this might have been a dangerous endeavor, she knew it was key to advancing their employer-employee relationship beyond doing what’s told to knowing what to do. Inside, she found the room as regal as the man, but still, the odd painting and old rug proved that this room was not one of his favorites. He seemed to have inherited the room from his father, moved a modern desk in and plopped a phallic statue on it to call it his own.
Fingers brushing on the edge of the desk, she walked around it, pulling out her Blackberry and a pen from her suit pocket, and stopping at a closed, small notebook. Resting a hand on the table, she opened the notebook and began writing in the next week’s schedule, amending and updating as necessary, leaving a few Post-Its to briefly explain the more drastic changes, following the advice of a longer-serving housekeeper. Hesitating as she wrote, she noticed the name Xavier had mentioned to her as someone to watch out for and gently bit her lip. Shaw recently planned a golfing trip, but she could hardly see the Black King donning a polo and khakis for a day wandering a golf course. She noticed a few days ago the company started hoarding money in an off-shore account; perhaps he planned a business venture..
