Jean locked the trunk and followed behind Alex. She had her hands shoved in her pockets and before she had the chance to pull the doors open they opened of their own accord, letting a rush of warm heated air flush out the door.
She slipped inside after Alex and Scott and headed straight towards the receptionist. Elanor, the name badge on her chest said. Jean gave a pained, forced smile, as she began to craft their lie of a cover story. It wasn't like they could tell the truth and still be guaranteed medical aid. "I'm sorry we didn't call ahead, but it's an emergency. We think he's been hit by a car. I'm pretty sure his leg is broken," She nodded towards Scott, who at that point in time should've been doing his best to look wounded and pathetic. She didn't hold the glance with him for too long, and turned her attentions back to the receptionist, who had a frown of distaste on her face.
"The amount of animals I see through here hit by cars..." She muttered, and tapped away at the computer in front of her. "You've been here before?" She asked.
"Yes, I'm Jean Grey. My dog's name is Scott."
"Scott Grey. Right... Looks like this isn't the first time." The receptionist looked up at Jean with a raised eyebrow and Jean had the good sense to look abashed.
"We fixed the fence where he escaped last time but he tunnelled another hole elsewhere. You'd think he'd learn, but he likes to run free, chasing the neighbour's cat... you know."
"It's all right, it happens." The receptionist stood up and fetched a clip board. She stepped out from behind the desk and beckoned for both Jean and Alex holding Scott to follow after her. "I'll take you to the examination room. The vet will be along in a few minutes. While you're waiting, I'd like you to fill out this form as best you can."
"Of course."
The examination room wasn't particularly big. There was a bench in the middle, well above the level of Jean's waist, and several cupboards lined the walls, which were painted a blanket off-white colour. There were a few posters for pet insurance and diagrams of the canine and feline anatomy which Jean had seen and memorised during the many other previous visits they'd undertaken. There was only one seat in the corner, but Jean was quite happy standing. If Alex wanted it, it was his.
