Diana was relieved when Joe said she could stay up here. She didn't waste any more time. The shelves were a bit far back for her but she could manage by remembering she wasn't that far from safety. She hurried to get the stuff off the shelves and set up outside. Far too soon there was nothing else to do until the injured starting showing up. ----
Far off in the battle, Northstar was flying high above the darkseekers. He had a pattern that seemed to be working well enough. A bright burst of light to blind the darkseekers near him, and then blasting with concussion blasts and hitting as many as he could while they were blinded. While his light did work to blind the critters, it didn't do the same damage as the UV grenades. However there were only so many grenades made. He would have to deal with taking them down with just his mutant abilities.
The massive onslaught of infected was wearing him down, though, and he eventually mistimed his retreat up out of reach. A Darkseeker caught hold of Jean Paul's ankle and slammed him into a nearby tree before Northstar could even react. There was a large cracking sound as he hit and pain flashed through his body. Northstar pushed the rushing masses back enough to get just above their reach again. He put forth another pulse of light, but as he did so his entire right half of his body blossomed in a fire of pain. He dropped just a bit as he closed his eyes and cried out in pain. It was close enough for a flailing arm to cathc him again. With a twisting wrench Jean Paul was pulled from the air again and slammed face first into a tree, there was another crack and Northstar fell into darkness. ---
Diana was sitting next to a stainless steel stand. The moonlight reflected off of it and her own worried face looked back at her. She had friends out there. Her roommate Jubilee, her friend Troy, that new brotherhood chick Tabby, gruff Will, her teachers. Four months, in four months she had planned to ask to join up. It would be her 18th birthday. Now she wasn't sure if she was going to live to see it, or who might not be able to make it because they were dead. They had already lost Dr McCoy.
She lightly rested her hand on her warped image and was startled to see her claws seem to sink into the metal. There wasn't even any resistance. The image rippled and she saw Northstar hit the tree and fall. The Darkseekers around him seemed dazed and didn't rush right away, but she could see tell he wasn't about to get back up any time soon. That was her French teacher. She could remember him smiling that reserved smile of relief when she would speak. He always said she had a good accent. Without thinking, Silver ported to him in a flash. She landed on his chest and glanced around her. She was surrounded by Darkseekers and they were starting to get their bearing and coming after them. Diana grabbed the front of Northstar's suit and prayed this would work. With another flash she was back inside, next to the cots she had set up.
The reality of what she had done just hit her. She looked down and saw that she was still sitting on Mr Beaubier. She scrambled off and looked horrified, both at what she had done and the fear that the man might already be dead. "I'm sorry." She blurted out. She glanced over to the stand and the image she had thought she had seen was no longer there. It was just stainless steel. She started trembling and looked back down at Northstar. He wasn't awake. There was blood pouring from a nasty gash on his head and he looked very pale. She also thought his arm and shoulder looked just a bit off. "Will he be ok?" She really hoped so.
