“I don’t see any change in the multiplication rate of the samples I tried, you may want to reassess your hypothesis,” Moira said into the view screen attached to the wall.
Joe sighed and began tapping his fingers on the counter which was littered with notes and scrap paper, most containing illegible ramble jotted down by whoever was in deep thought at the time. When motioning a retort, he knocked over a mug full of cold coffee that had been sitting there from the person before. He grabbed a towel and blotted the mess on the floor. Frustrated with more than just spilled Folgers, Joe rubbed his temples and closed his eyes.
“You look like you could use some rest…”
Joe cut her off.
“I can’t properly replicate the human immune system! I know we’ve discussed this before Doctor, but I truly think the only way we’re going to make any progress is by using a human test subject. We need an infected person here in the lab, that we can consistently monitor.”
Lack of sleep chiseled away at Joe’s polite demeanor, but it wasn’t anything that the others took personally. Because every minute spent, every petri dish cultured, every slide viewed under the microscope was vital to seeking out a way to stop this epidemic. Whether it was over seas in Moira’s lab or here in the confines of the Mansion, the planet was in a race. This race would determine the fate of humanity, something that everyone had to fall asleep at night pondering.
“There’s not only safety concerns with what you want Josiah, but there are ethical ones as well. However, I too see the scientific advantage this would give us. I will support a consensual decision but I think it is something that needs to be discussed with the Professor,” Moira replied.
