"I think others would disagree, I always seem to offend people unintentionally. I'm too honest I've been told."
If Gus was going to learn more about the real Josiah, he would have to learn about the good and the bad. Joe did have the tendency to speak without borders, but the truth meant a lot to him. His career was based on science, facts, and truth, so honesty was extremely important to the doctor, even at the cost of feelings. Perhaps now wasn't the most appropriate time to let it all out, but Joe caught a glimpse of Jean-Paul past his date's shoulder and he felt it was now or never. Joe took both of their empty cups and placed them back on the table. He guided Gus to an area away from the others.
"Look, I don't know what you've heard, or been told, or think about about Jean-Paul and I, but I assure you that I've moved on from him. Yes we had a messy break up, yes there is resentment and bitterness looming over our heads, but I'm here with you. And to be honest I probably wouldn't have come tonight if it weren't for you. Out of all the powers, brains, and good looks on the compound I chose to get to know the man behind the camera."
Joe sighed into a cloud of dead air.
"I just, I just wanted to clear things up you know. I don't want you to think I have baggage. I mean I really like you and.."
He couldn't catch his breath, and couldn't understand why he was being a spaz about this. Before it got any worse, he stopped talking and took a breath.
