Birthdays were a time honored tradition in most families, and the Maximoff's still celebrated such things together, even if they didn't possess the world's riches. It wasn't a frivolous affair for the twins (or their belated mother and father), it was a moment to be treasured and remembered, celebrated with love and not materialism. That was not to say that they didn't get gifts for each other. On contrary, they marked their special day with handmade gifts... things that came from the heart and not a department store.
Those days were long gone, however.
The day their parents had died, Wanda and Pietro's birthdays became rather quiet and a little more personal. They didn't have much money either, so they got more creative with their celebrations. Generally, Wanda would prepare a meal and Pietro would read her a story. It might've been simple, but she never would have traded those memories for anything in the world. Those moments were priceless to her.
When a knock had sounded from her bedroom door, Wanda only had time to turn her head before her twin brother entered. Always so impatience was her brother, but things like that didn't bother her now. She had known him all her life; therefore, she had grown accustomed to his little quirks.
Her eyes flickered down from the colorfully wrapped package within his hand and back up to his eyes, and her face brightened almost instantly. "Happy birthday, my dearest," she said in return, as she crossed the room to stand before him, ready and willing to accept her gift. Ever since her arrival in the Western world, her eyes had been opened to the allure of materialistic, earthly possessions. Fashion seemed to be a budding interest of hers.
"Oh, what did you get me?" she inquired with an almost childlike enthusiasm.
