"Okay, Kurt," she repeated his name, making a mental note to address him as such from now on.
Wren was, by nature, a very emotional person. Only problem was that she had a very difficult time expressing herself around others. But, as of right now, she was trying to push that to the side. She needed to do this, or she was going to be stuck right where she was and she was tired of it. It was time to deal with it and move on.
"It's a long story," she began. "Before I came here a few months ago, I was living in a mall that was all but infested with infected humans... I had to defend myself against them pretty much all hours of the day if I couldn't find a safe place to hide."
You'd think it would probably be kind of easy to hide in place with so many windows during light hours, but it wasn't. Malls were dark without any electricity to sustain them.
"I was lucky, though. I suddenly developed the ability to render myself completely invisible," she explained. "I never knew I was a mutant until then..."
Stress.
Stress was the key to unlocking those strange, mysterious abilities. And up before the whole Cure Virus ordeal, Wren's life hadn't been more stressful than anyone else's. Before all of that happened, she had always had the support of her friends and family to keep her from wigging out over every, little thing. But, now, she found herself pretty much alone in the world and that was probably the straw the broke the camel's back - so to speak.
"Sometimes, I can't help but feel that I've been living a lie all along."
But, that wasn't all. No. There was more.
"That's not all that's bothering me, though. Not really. That's a relatively small problem compared to what occurred before that... It's been so hard to talk about it. I don't think I've ever told anyone what I'm about to tell you."
Her mind had been in a fog since she first came to the mansion. It was hard to remember everything she divulged to those she had met there, but she was almost positive she never confessed to murder.
"I lost someone really important to me. He contracted the Cure Virus, and he..." Wren had to breathe in and out for a moment. "He... died. Killed, actually."
Her tongue darted out across her lips; they had felt dry.
Breathe in. "I did it. I killed him." Exhale.
Tears began to fill her eyes, but they didn't fall.
"I didn't want to..."
