It had been like a scene straight out of a movie, only this was real life, and the girl didn't fall into the guy's arms and melt into a puddle of goo. No. Rogue had stood rooted in place, looking thoroughly nonplussed when he had suddenly grabbed ahold of her shoulders and leaned in to kiss her on the lips.
She couldn't even wrap her mind around the fact that he had kissed her... just like that. It wasn't something she had even considered to be a possible (or would that be probable?) scenario; she had expected to argue or fight, or have him walk away in a huff after she had explained why she had 'betrayed' them.
As he spoke to her, Rogue had remained still and silent; but she wasn't exactly absorbing every word he was saying. She had caught bits and pieces of it through her dazed confusion, of course; but when he had told her that he loved her, she felt her heart skip a beat and she actually had opened her mouth to say it back. However, she quickly snapped it back shut and clenched her jaw, because this was insane and totally out of the left field.
Why did he have to go and make things even more complicated? Why hadn't he done something to really piss her off? Why couldn't they just go on hating and not talking to each other?
But then, she suddenly was struck with a thought, albeit a pretty paranoid one: What if he was just doing and saying this stuff to trick her into coming back to the X-Men? And with this thought in mind, her expression grew more suspicious and she finally found her voice again, "Why are you doin' this?"
If she had learned anything being in the Brotherhood of Mutants, it was not to accept anything at face value. Everyone had a hidden agenda, whether they wanted to admit it or not, and while Bobby never struck her as the crafty type, people were capable of changing rapidly over time. And why would he be any different?
Snatching back her glove-clad hands, she took a step back away from him. This had to be some kind of joke. Surely. And if it was, indeed, a joke, Rogue couldn't find the least bit of humor in it.
