"I do believe the choice of sitting is rather out of my hands these days, but that's beside the point," Xavier said through the same pleasant smile he had been wearing before. "I do apologize for the undue familiarity. Far be it from me to imply such a thing. It's simply still hard for me to keep straight what's being said out loud and what isn't. I 'hear' everything equally clearly, whether thought or word. Once again, it wasn't my intention to pry."
It became apparent to Xavier that Forge was very much an angry young man. Not that he didn't have reasons to be but, still. He had no idea how easy it would be for Xavier just to flip a switch in his mind and make him... amenable to the Haven's needs, if not outright docile. But Xavier would never allow himself to do such a thing, especially since he had no idea if he could undo it. He had done just that to Cooper, a human who had been with him when the solar flare happened.
Cooper had not been a likable man, he'd been a cabbie with no family who had the misfortune of having been sent to Xavier's location on Black Friday. When Xavier collapsed at the onset of his telepathy, Cooper had tried to just wrestle him out of the cab so he wouldn't die of a seizure or something in his car. Xavier, in pain and more than a little scared and angry at his callousness, lashed out at Cooper, yelling at him to stop. Cooper had indeed stopped. Forever.
Xavier had broken his mind beyond his ability to repair it, and so he had felt responsible for the man and kept him as his manservant, who needed to be told what to do at all times. It was a burden, really. It wasn't an experiment Xavier was looking forward to trying again any time soon.
Of course he was angry that someone had come into his house and was calling him names and being generally rude as could be, but someone had to be the bigger person. If he didn't do it, then who would? "What I meant to say is that you can make a living and at the same time help others who are going through a similar situation to yours as far as these unexpected abilities. That is all. I hope you will consider my offer," he finished calmly, setting down his teacup.
