When Laura said he'd done what he had to do, Logan could only agree. He moved to sit down next to his daughter, placing his forearms on his knees because they'd never really gotten to the point where he felt comfortable giving her a hug or anything physical like that. But the pack instincts that came with his feral package demanded some sort of closeness right now. He knew very well what Laura had done too while in captivity. She had given as good as she got, he thought, remembering the scars some of the men he found bore from her claws with a fierce pride. "So did you. Now, it don't mean it's right, but it's what had to be done. I ain't used to this, to waging war on home soil. All those times I was deployed all over the world, mostly the Middle East, it was very easy. When you're at war, the usual rules don't apply. There ain't no such thing as thou shalt not kill. It's the law of the jungle out there, and whoever survives wins. It ain't fair that we got to live like this here, but that's what's happening. I'm sorry ya got caught up in all this ugliness, Laura. I really am."
He heard her describe her condition, and he thought he knew exactly what she was talking about. He glanced over at her with a grim little smile and replied, "I think I might know a thing or two about what you mean. There ain't a mark on you, on the outside." He looked up and straight ahead, away from her. "But sometimes the worst scars are the ones ya can't see." He wanted to ask if they'd hurt her, he wanted to know the extent of the abuse she had received, and at the same time he didn't want to know. His jaw muscles jumped as he clenched his teeth just thinking about it now. He looked down at the ground. "Fer what it's worth, darlin', you ain't alone no more. Unless y'wanna be. I'll respect whatever you decide. Just know that... I wanna be there, yannow? For you." If it sounded like it physically hurt him to say the words, it wasn't because he didn't want to say them to Laura. He meant every word. It was just difficult for him to talk, period.
"Jeebus. Look, darlin', I ain't no good at sayin' stuff, but we're blood, and that means something to me. You... I don't expect to be your pop or nothing, I know we's just met, and your ma wanted it that way, but we's still family. All right?" He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, his lips puffing out as he did. "Anyway, it's my fault yer like this, seeing as our mutation works the same and all. So if ya wanna talk about stuff, could be I've had it happen before and can help somehow."
Poor Logan, send him in and he could slice and dice his way through an army of the toughest roughnecks one could throw at him, but he was powerless before a young teenage girl and her problems.
