A smirk pulled up one side of Logan's usual scowl in response to Karr's kneejerk reaction to being hit. In the beginning, Logan had wanted to strangle the boy for being unable to stop himself from hitting back. Eventually, he learned to roll his eyes and ignore it, but lately it was almost endearing. He ruffled Karr's hair, pleasantly surprised that the adoption papers were not only in one piece, but were signed now.
"Yeah, son. He got bigger claws than you. Hell, he got bigger claws than anyone... maybe except me." Truly, the once bony protrusions that extended out of Logan's wrists were a rarity even among ferals, a very specific unique mutation. Most ferals had claws that grew like fingernails from their hands. So far, Logan only knew of himself and Laura having his kind of claws. Karr had a smaller version of them, something Logan already knew he was sensitive about. "So can ya try and steer clear of that maniac?"
He paused, and all humor leeched out of him as he remembered Serena. "Listen. You're marked by my scent. Any feral can figure out yer my kid, just like Laura, from smelling ya. Creed... that's Sabretooth's name, he wrote me a note in Serena's blood all over the walls of that cabin up north just 'cause he could. Just 'cause her telekinesis wasn't enough to keep him down long enough for her to escape. He killed her ta get to me, only because she had my smell on her. Whaddaya think he'd do to my son?" He sighed again, and it sounded almost like a groan. "It's partly why I wanted ya ta stay here. Thought you'd be... safe." He let that sink in.
"So if ya catch wind of his ugly ass, you run, ya hear me? You run and you call me on that comm. I'll have it keyed up so's only you and I can use it. You... jus'..."
Logan swallowed hard. It was his turn now to bite his emotions back. How he loved this obnoxious brat! How had that happened? Was blood really that thick? Yes. Yes, it was. Especially for a feral with pack instincts. He took the adoption papers from Karr and gave him his copy.
"Jus' stay safe," he finally managed in a gruffer voice than usual. "And ya better call me if ya need me, Karr. Remember that. Yer family. Wherever I end up, y'got a home with me." With that, he clamped his teeth to grinding and nodded hard, once, before turning on his heel and walking towards the door. If Karr didn't stop him, or have anything else to say, he'd just keep walking until the damn knot in his throat eased up.
