"Well, that ain't for me to decide," he replied with some amusement both at the way she'd been spellbound by the A.I. voice and at the determination wafting off of her. Then he went on to explain. "I ain't team leader, y'see. First we figure if y'can fight, and if ya can't, we teach you. Same with everything else. Strategy, teamwork..." He shrugged to indicate that the list could go on.
"We can all propose new folks, but recommendations are the field leader's choice. Final decision is Chuck's, though. Ya know, Xavier. It's his team, is what it boils down to." He waited for Laura to digest this information before saying or doing anything else, studying her demeanor and scent for a reaction. He couldn't help but think the girl was maybe too pretty to be his kid. He wasn't sure how he felt about that.
