"No one half as charming as you, Pete." That at least got a genuine smile out of her, for a moment. Things were too heavy on her mind for it to last longer than that moment, but...well, what did one expect? Wisdom wasn't stupid, and she could see something was wrong. It was in the tension in his body, the way he was holding himself. She just knew him too well. Of course, they both knew what was wrong.
Of course, his suggestion to go to the infirmary was met with an almost angry frown, and a shake of her head. "Dammit Pete, I may be dying but I'm not going to go in a fucking hospital bed." Then suddenly stopping and shooting him an almost worried look. They'd been dancing around that for a bit now, and she wasn't sure how he'd react to the bluntness of the words. Finally she just decided to keep on with what she was going to say. "Just somewhere where I can get cleaned up?"
The apology drew a shake of her head. "Why you walking on eggshells around me, huh? You don't have to pretend. I know what's happening." That was as far as she was able to get before her throat closed up, a combination of fear and anger. So instead she just grit her teeth for a moment and studied the walls as they walked. "Just...don't worry about it. It's ok." It wasn't ok, but she was at a loss as to what else to tell him.
