News 8 Morning News Special Report Who: News 8 Reporter and Kira What: Morning News: Cure Failure? When: Morning News Thursday, June 3rd Where: Broadcast to the greater NYC area
Her call to the station had gotten a flurry of attention, and a request for her presence for the morning news show if at all possible. Of course, it had indeed been possible, the girl paying for a cab and catching it far, far from her home so none of the Haven vehicles could be traced.
The rather frenzied pace of the news show environment had left her almost breathless, but there wasn't much she had to do. Go where she was told, shake the hand of the man with the empty smile, sit down with her folder of medical documentation still clutched tightly to her chest. They'd said something about wanting shots of those at some point, something which she wasn't going to argue with. After all, they'd already had several people look at them and declare them genuine.
The interview started a few seconds after the red light on the camera went solid, and she figured no one would see her sweat through the layers of makeup they'd put on her.
"This morning we have with us a mutant who claims to have proof that the Cure is, in fact, not a cure. She has come forward in light of the new proposed legislation in an exclusive interview with the News 8 team. Could you tell us a bit about yourself, Miss?"
God, but she was nervous. Still, Kira was doing her best not to show it now, the focus on her as the man waited for an answer. "My name's Kira. I grew up in California, and came to New York after the flare. Like a lot of mutants, I don't like what happened to me so when a chance for a cure came, I jumped at it." She'd been instructed not to tell everything at once, to let the interviewer lead, which was precisely what she was doing.
"So, tell us about the Cure."
"Well, you've seen it all on the news. It's a series of injections. Lots of them. At first it seemed to work, too. My powers went away, I was normal, but...then it stopped working."
"It stopped? How long ago was that, and what happened? Did you contact the agency distributing the Cure about it?"
"It was almost two weeks ago. My powers came back, but there was something wrong. I can't control them, they come and go randomly now. I did report it, and they told me to come back for some booster shots. I did, several times. The shots didn't do anything."
"You claim to have proof of this?"
Without a word she put down the folder, opening it to pull out treatment records stamped not only with a time and date, but on official letterhead of the agency distributing. "Here." On cue, the cameraman zoomed in, getting detailed shots of the documents.
"I'd like to assure our viewers that we have examined these documents and they appear genuine. So, Kira, why come forward now?"
"Well, the Cure obviously isn't a cure. If it's not a cure, then what is it? It must have been tested. And if it's not a cure then there's no reason to force anyone else to take it. It would be insane."
"Do you regret taking the cure?"
That brought a thoughtful silence from her, and then a slow shake of her head. "No. I wanted to be...well, normal again. Seems it's not possible, but maybe I can be a lesson in what not to do to others who feel like I did. Can't change who, or what, you are."
"Thank you, Kira. This is has been a special report on the Cure Controversy, from News 8, your first source for breaking news."
After the interview, Kira booked it out of there. She wasn't stupid, and if there really was something bad attached to the Cure whomever knew about it would be on her with a vengeance. And hopefully Pete had seen that interview, because it was him she contacted over the communicator. Hoping he'd know how to disappear for a bit. Perhaps stupidly of her, she'd accepted a cellphone from one of the show executives, too. Something about wanting to do a follow-up interview at some point, and it wouldn't look great if she just made those accusations and then vanished.
