Having just celebrated his 87th birthday last month, Pope Benedict XVI died in the early hours of Friday morning. Catholics the world over are in mourning. His funeral, to be presided over by his lifelong friend Cardinal Stafford, is scheduled for this evening in Rome, one o'clock pm Eastern Standard Time. After his funeral, there will be fifteen days of discussion among the Cardinals and Bishops about the qualities that will be needed in the next Holy Father to lead the church in this time of change. After that time has passed, the Cardinals will once again find themselves in Conclave, and will not emerge again until Pope Benedict's successor has been elected.
Thought the pope was 87, he had been considered healthy and fit by his physicians, working hard to combat the encroachment of secular humanism into the minds and morals of the world's Christians. His death came as a surprise to many, as his energy seemed boundless. Details of his death have not been announced, and the church is claiming that the details are unimportant, that what is important was his life, not how it ended. This is in keeping with the church's response to the deaths of other arch-prelates, but coming on the heels of the church's recent embroilment with terrorists in New York has many critics of the church's policy wondering and asking for a full disclosure and autopsy.
