"I never had the luxury of skepticism," he said. "I've had these abilities all my life. And I've known about the things that go bump in the night since I was five. They're drawn to people like me. People with a shine to them. I'm sure I'd drive your doctor friend up the wall, trying to disprove me." He understood it, of course. People were afraid of the things they didn't understand. They wanted to make everything fit into neat little boxes because it made the world less scary. The problem was that the scary things didn't go away just because you didn't believe in them.
He followed her to her room, looking around the apartment as he went. Then he sat on the edge of the bed, not quite making himself comfortable. He didn't need to be comfortable for this.
"Go ahead and lay down," he said. "Like I said, if this works, you'll actually manage some sleep. You may as well be ready for it."
