Neal still didn't know how it had happened, what he had done to bring his father back that had caused this. He liked to think that maybe, if he had known the price, he would never have done it. But it was hard to say. He'd wanted to get back to Emma and Henry, so maybe the price wouldn't have mattered. And, deep down, he'd wanted his father back. It wasn't just about what Rumple could do or the power he held, no matter how much Neal had tried to justify it in his head. He missed his father and he hated that Rumple had felt the need to sacrifice himself. Of course, now it seemed that he had done the same. His entire world was narrowed down to blinding agony, a pain sharper and more present than he had ever felt in his very long life. Emma was there and she was trying to talk to him and then it was like the world fell away and he was somewhere else, sidewalk replacing the forest floor. His vision had gone slightly hazy but he could see blond hair and someone was holding onto him, speaking softly but frantically in words he couldn't make out. "Emma?" he asked, words forced out as he gritted his teeth against another wave of pain. "What's going on? I don't-" "I'm not Emma." And now he could tell the voice was different. The accent strange but somehow familiar in a way he couldn't place. "I'm Alice. And you'll be okay. You will. This is a nasty bit of magic, but...but we'll fix it." "Don't think it can be fixed," Neal said with a tired sigh. "I'm dying. Magic always has a price and sometimes that price is..." He trailed off as his body was wracked by pain. "Where's Emma? Where's Rumple...where's my father?" His father had to be all right, or else all of this was meaningless. |
