The time since he'd waited on that dock all night had seemed eternal, pain making every second stretch and stretch. Edward had imagined seeing Stede again in what he'd thought was every circumstance, the scenario changing from poignant to furious depending on his mood. He hadn't imagined any of this, especially not the confusion of emotion that he just didn't know what to do with. But most of all he had never imagined that Stede would have so little to say to him after everything.
"Well, you're right about that," he responded after a moment.
