He'd found an odd little niche for himself, between Meetra and Atisha, with repairing and creating prosthetics. He enjoyed the work precisely because it was the antithesis of most of his life's work. He'd created so many things that took life, that making something to improve life felt gratifying.
He was currently in bed, feeling mildly concerned about the sounds coming from the ensuite. He didn't think Vex had anything much to drink the night before, but perhaps she had. He was just about to get out of bed and go check on his wife when he heard the sound of the sink and then the door opening and closing.
"Are you alright, darling?" he asked as she slipped back into bed, tugging her close. He didn't care if it was something contagious. He'd happily brave illness if it meant comforting her.
All of it was currently on the back of her mind, seeing she was much more occupied with emptying her stomach. She knew the signs though and while in other circumstances she'd worry, she could push them aside. At least, she could push them aside enough. For her children's sake she tried not to be the type of person she'd been during their travels. It would hurt them, and she'd die (again) before she did that.
The water was refreshing and she splashed her face before taking a breath, and rejoining Percy. She nodded and set her head on his shoulder, breathing him in. It wasn't like this was a surprise. "I'm fine. Or well," she went to take his hand so she could set it over her stomach, "I suppose I should say we're fine." She ended with a small, bright smile.
And then she was saying that they were fine. Well, yes. He was fine. Obviously. He was feeling perfectly normal and he had his wife right here, so he was indeed fine. Especially since she was fine. Then he registered that she had placed his hand on her stomach and his eyes went wide. He still remembered how it had felt when she'd told him she was pregnant with Vesper, the shock and panic and excitement that had been almost overwhelming.
"Really?" he said, his voice soft and shocked. "You're...we're...really?" They'd always planned to have a big family, both of them wanting quite a few children, but some part of him had expected it would be longer before they had any more. Still, he could feel that familiar excitement and terror. What if I fuck this up? What if I fail them? He forced it down, the way he always did.
She watched him, seeing the wheels turn. She had seen Gods (and those pretended to be one) and magic, and divine realms and still nothing was quite as good as when he was truly happy, and he realized he was allowed to be that.
"All the signs are there," she remembered how she'd felt with Vesper, when she'd realized. Half terrified, half exited. She felt the same, now. "And I'm very late." She went to take his hand so she could kiss the back of it, knowing his fears.
He took a deep breath and let it out, before bringing her hand up to give a matching kiss. "That's amazing, darling," he said, the awe and wonder clear on his face. "I love you so much."
They were going to be parents. Again. They were already parents, but now they would be again. And his mind was reeling. "We'll have to tell Vesper - and Trinket - that they'll have a brother or sister in the future."
She nodded, knowing they'd both be excited. She wished Pike was here, but with Keyleth it would go easy. Nothing like havign an Arch-Druid in your corner to ease pregnancy. "And then tell the others."
"We have to tell your brother," he said, the words like a kick in the chest. Because Vax had missed out on Vesper. But he'd be here for this. And something about that made the whole thing more emotional.
"Can we not talk about this, right now? I want to be happy." It'd need discussing eventually, but she was taking it step by step. And she had her selfish moments. "Can we talk names instead?"
"We can talk names," he said. "Though we had talked before about...Vax for a boy. As a middle name. But...I mean...only if you still want to." He hesitated. "I had a thought, for a girl's name...but it's very petty."
That was a consideration. "I still can't find a first, and I should reiterate I really don't mind the fourth you know." She settled so she could look at him, "alright. I got first pick so what's your idea?"
"Technically," he said, "the standard naming goes name, patronym or matronym - hence Fredrickstein - von paternal grandmother's maiden name, mother's maiden name de Rolo. So if we were being very formal, it would be Something Percival von Klossowski Vessar de Rolo. Or Something Vex'ahlia von Klossowski Vessar de Rolo. But that's just...a lot."
He smiled. "Juniper," he said simply. "Not sure on a middle name, but don't you think honoring Scanlan's mother would be a lovely idea?"
"I love you, and if that's what you'd like I'm very okay with it, but it is a Lot," she offered at his explanation. "the only ones I'd want to honor is Vax or mother, and she already has been. So any boy can be your decision. At least first names."
The comment made her laugh. The idea of Scanlan's face might be too good to pass up. And honestly she was still hurt by how he'd left. "Oh, that would be lovely." And it was a pretty name. She considered for a moment, "what about Cassie?"
"Frederick Vax'ildan de Rolo?" he suggested. "We could call him Freddie." Vax would get a kick out of that. "What do you think of that?" He was pretty sure Vex would like it, but he still wanted to check.
He was so glad that Vex appreciated the idea. Scanlan had thrown his mother in their face when he left and it seemed exactly the right sort of petty to name a daughter after her. Besides, it was a very pretty name. "Juniper Cassandra de Rolo," he said. "Yes. I quite like that."
The suggestion made her smile, "yeah. I like that." she set one of her hands over her stomach. In the end, she'd be glad to have a healthy baby, but she could ask Kiki for help and had enough of an understanding to know things would be fine.
Jury was out on how Scanlan would take it, but she was pretty set on the idea either way. He'd been so adamant on how little he felt they cared, so perhaps now he'd learn they did care. Quite a bit. "So do I."
"Well, that's settled," he said. "Names are figured out. We have a plan of action. And I am going to go and make you some tea to settle your stomach and breakfast."
He leaned over and kissed his wife. "I love you very much, darling," he said, then rubbed his hand over her stomach. "And you as well."
