The dashboard lights weren't doing much to hide the flicker of emotion across Ray's face. Surprise, timidity, optimism. Courage, too, or he wouldn't have taken Miller up on his offer that first time.
But then you had to have that to be in the line of work Ray had chosen.
"Think so, too," Miller said, pretending to watch the road as it unfurled ahead of them, the headlight-illuminated concrete fading into the blue-grey of all things at night. "You want to talk feelings sometime, or milestones? Or - any of that... Just making sure you know I'm all ears. Card was definitely cute, though. I'm gonna need to frame it."
