Lily held Kara close, and shook her head slightly. "Maybe you could have," Lily agreed. "But most likely, you wouldn't have been able to do anything about it even if you had been there," she said gently. "This isn't your fault. Whether you were mad at them or not wouldn't have changed it. It wouldn't have made it not happen," she murmured.
"What happened to you isn't your fault, and you shouldn't have to change, or hide." Lily hesitated. "Where I'm from ... our kind, witches and wizards, we have to hide ourselves. We have to keep ourselves quiet from people who don't have magic, because ..."
Lily peered across the grass. "Because people are afraid of things that are different. They fear the unknown, and unfortunately, violence is their first instinct, their first reaction. Understanding and acceptance take a long, long time, and ... it's never easy. What happened was a sick tragedy," her voice caught slightly. Wasn't her own death a sick tragedy? Or ... it would be. "And it shouldn't have happened," Lily said quietly. "But you can't blame yourself, love."
