He knew that he was really overthinking the prosthetic. He wasn't an idiot, and he remembered what learning to fly for the first time with Toothless had been like, and how when he'd been forced to knuckle down and not use his 'cheat sheet' he'd flown better, but all the same, it was exceptionally irritating to him that no matter how many tweaks and adjustments they made, a wooden leg just didn't respond the same way that a real leg would have. He knew that that was to be expected, and that he was lucky that they'd even managed to build him a prosthetic that could respond at all or else he'd be stuck on the ground, but... it had been two months, and he still didn't feel nearly as comfortable riding as he had before the accident.
Toothless was growing more and more irritated with how slow he wanted to take it. Hiccup had been expecting to, any day now, suddenly find himself thrown off the back of his dragon and have them both sent sprawling. It seemed like the sort of thing that Toothless would do to try and knock some sense into him.
So when he had leaned over to make some adjustments to the prosthetic, letting Toothless steer for a moment, and then suddenly found himself falling through the air, he wasn't all the surprised. He just closed his eyes and did his best to hit the ground rolling, so that it wouldn't be such a dull thud that caused so many broken bones. Thankfully, Toothless seemed to have had the sense enough to try it close to the ground.
"Ow," Hiccup remarked in a tone that seemed to say, 'well, that hurt about as much as I was expecting it to'. He turned towards his dragon, who was back on his feet, making low panicky, disoriented noises, and backing away and around in circles in a way that Hiccup found both familiar and confusing. "Well, bud, that's about what happens when the tail-flag-thing can't catch the wind. We both crash. I thought we covered this in How To Train Your Dragon 101?"
Toothless was still acting funny though, and Hiccup was starting to get concerned - he hadn't really explored his surroundings much beyond 'hard ground' yet - and he took a couple of awkward steps towards him. "Hey, hey, Toothless, it's okay bud. Calm down. Are you hurt or something?" Resting a hand on his dragon's nose - which took more effort than he'd been expecting - he managed to settle the worst of the anxiety, but the way Toothless' eyes kept darting around made Hiccup finally take stock of where they were, and he glanced around.
Huh. Well. This was new. It took him several moments of awkward, stunned blinking (which seemed to give Toothless a rather self-satisfied air that Hiccup wouldn't have been too fond of if he wasn't so busy being confused) before he thought ahead enough to-
"Hide," he murmured. "We need to... we stick out... more than we usually do. Come on." He attempted to push and herd Toothless towards the bushes with marginal success, hoping that someone didn't come along until he could at least get Toothless hidden.
