He stopped when he heard River calling out to him, partly out of surprise to hear her voice, and partly because he felt it was just polite. She wouldn't have acknowledged him if she didn't plan on having some sort of conversation, he didn't think, so he'd let her catch up to his pace and... see where it went from there. "Walkin'?" he asked as she caught up, shooting her a brief glance as he continued. He doubted that was what she was referring to though.
"Dunno darlin'," he said quietly, the moroseness he felt at being separated from his ship easing into his voice. He suspected that out of all his crew, River was probably the one who understood best his connection with his ship - maybe even better than Zoe, and not just because she was a reader. She felt it too. "Hopefully soon, but you've heard 'em - they ain't got a way back for us yet. Seems we're stuck here for a bit, at least." He was none to happy about it, really.
"S'a bit of a mess, yeah," he agreed, gazing around the compound. "But the people're friendly enough. Most've'em anyway," he said with a shrug. He belatedly wondered if River had made any friends and wondered if posing that question, he'd hear about a strange insect from a far away planet who was sentient that River was having long conversations with during the day. Seemed to fit the profile, at least.
