First or Third???
I'm just rather curious...
What do you all prefer? First person or third person? I'm trying to figure out the benefits and the downsides of both.

I feel like I have this problem a lot actually. ^^ It sort of depends on what the audience needs to know about the story—will it be easier to give information in third person? or easier to hide information in first person?
In general, I prefer third person as I can explain more things than the character may be willing to divulge and for some reason it sounds more professional to me, but I'm pretty sure that's just my tastes and nothing more. ^_^

Oooh, Princess is right; there can be strategic reasons for using one over the other in a particular fic. All things being equal, however, I prefer 3rd person. I can't really give a good reason, though. I also hate stories written in present tense, but can't give a good reason for that either. Hee! Just a personal quirk.

I prefer to use 3rd person. I really love 1st person, and find it can be great, but I tend to get kinda lost writing it. 3rd person is just more structured and easier to do right.

*nods* First person can be very personal in that it lets the reader into the narrator's head, but it's very hard to get right. I will very rarely buy a novel written in first person. I'm more tolerant of first person fanfics because I'm not paying for the privilege of reading them and I'll already be familiar with the characters and settings. If it's a character I like, I'm even more likely to appreciate the look into what someone else thinks is going on in his head. But in professional fiction, a quick glance between the pages will tell me if it's first person or not and when I see the "I" references, more often than not, I leave the book on the shelf.
As a reader, I prefer third person stories. It gives me a wider view and a greater range/choice of characters for me to relate to without forcing me feel like I have to like the main character or the characters that main character likes.

I think it all boils down to your preference as a writer. Personally, I like a mix of the two. If I had to choose, then it would third person.
