The Lestranges had but two loyalties in their lives - their loyalty to one another, and their loyalty to their Dark Lord, Voldemort. Having espoused his cause from an early age, and having spilled much blood on his behalf, they found themselves unable to do other than obey when he willed something to be done. Whether his will were made manifest orally, or through some other medium.
Although sometimes even they could be misled by false appearances, and mischievous gods.
Roddy first became aware of the book when he found it sitting upon his piano. Unknown to many, Rodolphus Lestrange was an accomplished pianist, possessed of very talented fingers. He was also quite handy with a knife. He spotted the tome when he was about to sit down to indulge in his daily exercises. It was old and smelled of deep dark mysteries, so of course he picked it up and perused its contents.
Inside the book a piece of parchment lay, and written on it was a message which purported to be from Lord Voldemort, directing he and Bella to take upon themselves a task in his name. They were to go to the Department of Mysteries and from there they would enter a portal which would take them to another world, one in which they would find an artifact possessed of great power, inside of a temple. Voldemort wanted that artifact and he wanted them to retrieve it. The message was quite clear.
Smiling to himself, Roddy flew up the stairs to where his wife still lay in slumber. He climbed into the bed beside her and began bestowing kisses upon her, with the sole intention of waking her and then to enlighten her as to the great quest upon which the were being sent by their Lord and Master.
