She did not answer immediately, as she was taking in her surroundings and making sure she did not stray far from the crowds of people.
Clarice did not want to let Hannibal inside her head any more than he already was. She knew nothing good could ever come from it. She opted to lie, though she knew he would see right through it. "Everything is fine," she said simply. It was easier to lie, to keep herself from becoming vulnerable to him. But she already was vulnerable to him, wasn't she? She had come out here upon his instructions, with no idea why or what he wanted. She wasn't afraid of him victimizing her in the way he did others. She was afraid of something else about him, but couldn't quite place it.
Clarice continued to scan all around her as she had always been taught, up, down, across, left, right. No sign of Dr. Lecter, but she did notice a group of men staring at her.
