Raylan slowly removed the phone from his ear and looked again, looked at the stranger, then back in the phone, a slow double take, as if he hadn't heard him properly. "Excuse me?" He figured there were places that didn't get phone service, where you couldn't get a bar to save your life. But he hadn't figured this close to Austin that he'd find one of those.
It sounded like the stranger said no one has a phone. But he didn't mean that, surely. Everyone had a phone, it was fairly standard. When he pointed, Raylan noticed something that had escaped his attention before.
There was no highway. The macadam had disappeared. The ground was nothing but dirty and scrub as far as the eye could see.
"I'm not sure what you mean," Raylan said. "Come again?"
