Who: Drew & Dawson Nolan
What: Nolan brothers getting settled in
When: 15th Feb
Where: Their home
Rating: Low
Warnings: n/a
Rubbing the towel over his hair, Dawson huffed out a breath and finished dressing. He'd moved all the boxes that the long-haul guy had asked for help unloading and had moved them into the right room, texted his brother asking for him to please bring home some food because he was starving and had taken a nice hot shower, all in the space of two hours and he felt super accomplished. And, since Drew had been gone for most of the day, super lonely.
He'd done a bit of job-hunting earlier that morning but hadn't really been all that successful in finding something that caught his interest. The library - when he emailed them - told him that they weren't hiring at that moment but they'd be in touch when they were. He thought about doing security but was aware that he'd probably be more of a burden than an asset since he wouldn't be able to hear if there was a problem that happened outside of his eyeline.
Despondent after a fruitless job search he'd organised and done some heavy lifting.
He smelt Drew coming in rather than hearing the door open and, like an over eager puppy, dropped his towel on his bed and padded hurriedly down the stairs, greeting his twin at the door with a huge grin. [Welcome home!]
Drew thankfully still had contacts in LA and had spent the day hitting them up for work and jobs so he could start bringing some money in because their inheritance would only take them so far, it was important that they had some sort of income.
He'd stopped off at a Chinese place that he could recall from memory did really good food and ordered enough to feed a small army (read: Dawson) and headed home where he was greeted readily and sunnily by Dawson who looked like he'd stepped out of the shower. Unable to sign with his hands given that they were laden with bags he instead spoke slowly. "Good to be home. I got the food you wanted. Hopefully I got enough."
Drew tipped his head for Dawson to follow him as he took the stairs two at a time with his long legs.
Dawson followed eagerly, taking the bag of food out of Drew's hands immediately as soon as he could, sniffing the air above it because it smelt incredible. His stomach agreed, by the rumbling he could feel which was accompanied by a loud grumble. He grinned, moving into the kitchen area and tugging Drew with him because, well, food.
Putting the bag down on the granite countertop he pulled out containers and fished out forks, hardly waiting to dig into the food he knew was his. They had similar food tastes, but he tended to avoid anything on the stronger end of spicy nowadays.
[How did it go today? I started shifting things around but didn't actually unpack, just moved things. The last of our stuff arrived too. Man, this tastes good.]
Drew smirked when he heard Dawson hurrying after him and he knew he'd made a good choice with the food if his brother's reaction was any indication. He had definitely avoided getting anything too spicy as he knew how Dawson was with those flavours these days whereas Drew still enjoyed them so all of Dawson's food had his name scrawled on the containers so it was easy to tell.
[Today went well. I hit up all my old contacts and it looks promising. Really promising] He offered Dawson a smile when he gave an enthusiastic thumbs up to Drew's selection of food. [I remembered this really nice Chinese place I used to go all the time and thankfully they are still in business.]
[We need to go grocery shopping for real though.] Dawson mused around another mouthful of food. His appetite hadn't dimmed any. He pushed the container that didn't have a name on it towards Drew and a fork, impatiently pointing out with his expression alone that his brother should also be eating because at least then Dawson wasn't eating alone.
Thankfully the two of them had mastered their own language where they signed with one hand, which made a lot of communication much easier. A sort of Nolan-specific short hand that had been developed over their years together and wasn't forgotten in that decade they were apart. [Old contacts are good, it'll make finding work easier. I need to find something since the library isn't hiring.]
Drew rolled his eyes and picked up the fork before he popped the lid. [I agree with that. Need to get these cupboards filled especially for when you get the munchies] He took his first mouthful of food and was very pleased that it still tasted as good as he remembered.
[It isn't? That sucks. Any ideas what you want to do?]
[No.] The answer was blunt and honest, accompanied by a heavy sigh. Dawson hadn't gone to college or really done anything that might help him understand just where he wanted to go. He'd liked working in the library; he'd just been able to get on with things, sorting books and helping with queries and reading during his considerable downtime. [Helpful, I know.]
He turned away and pulled two beers out of the fridge, flicking the caps off and passing one over to Drew, leaning his elbows on the counter. [We can hit up the store tomorrow? Are you gonna be gone all day again?] He really needed a job. Dawson hated extended periods of being alone and with Drew out working probably all hours soon enough, he needed something that would fill his time. He really couldn't go and hang around The White Rabbit all the time. Too long in there made his nose itch.
Drew frowned at the defeatist tone in his brother's signing because it was possible to put emotion into ASL. [You know where you could try? Wing's Curiosities, pretty sure you'd like that place and I passed by it earlier and it says he's looking for staff]
He took the beer with a grateful smile before shaking his head. [Tomorrow is going to be a day at home day. I have a lot of stuff I need to sort out and like you said we need to go shopping for food so you're stuck with me tomorrow]
Dawson would have argued at the frown that crossed his brother's face but it was followed by an actual suggestion which was worth considering. He wrinkled his nose in thought. [Maybe,] he offered with a hum. [I'll go see maybe in a couple of days? Good thing to keep me busy next time you're out and about doing your social thing.]
He did, however, beam at Drew when he confirmed he'd be spending tomorrow at home. The effect was instantaneous, like a weight was immediately lifted from Dawson's shoulders. [You say that like it's a bad thing.]
[Yeah, definitely worth a shot] Drew replied as he ate another mouthful of rice. [He's kind of weird, Wing that is, but he means well so...] Definitely worth Dawson checking out in the interest of finding work and finding something that he would actually enjoy.
He chuckled and smiled at his twin. [Nice to know you aren't fed up of me already]
[I wish I had some kind of career, though,] Dawson signed, huffing out a breath and chewing thoughtfully on a piece of chicken, distracted by how good it tasted so he fished about in the box for another piece, triumphantly stuffing it in his mouth with a grin over at Drew.
Rolling his eyes a moment later, though, he signed - with some feeling - [As if I would ever get bored of you. Don't talk stupid, stupid.]
Drew watched Dawson closely as he huffed out a breath. [Never too late. You could get a job but take night classes in something that you're interested in?] Wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility.
[Well, we have been in each other's pockets a lot for the last few years and I know it's hard, being a wolf and not having a pack] Because yes of course Drew had been doing his research.
[I just have no idea what I'd take classes in. So I could but until I know what I want it's a waste of time, right?] He wished he'd been around Drew as they were growing up, he'd probably have found a passion with his brother, Drew had always been able to help him see things he couldn't.
He rubbed the back of his head and looked away, scuffing his toes on the floor before shrugging. [You're my pack.] The sign was sincere and it was true. He might not have wolves, and turning alone during the full moon was hard but it was no different to what he had gone through before. At least turning at home, in the basement of their new place, would be better because it smelt like home and Drew. Until he found another one to take him in, this was better than turning in the wild. [Is this your way of saying you're sick of me?] He looked like he was teasing, but his eyes said something different, his eyes said he was worried that was the truth.
[No, definitely not a waste of time. You just have to figure out what you want to study and go from there] Drew encouraged because he definitely wasn't going to let Dawson think he couldn't do something just because it wasn't immediately obvious.
He shook his head. [No, this is not my way of saying that I'm sick of you.] And it wasn't but Drew knew there was a part of Dawson's life he would never truly understand given that he was human and Dawson hadn't been for a very long time. [You're definitely stuck with me].
Dawson shrugged and didn't comment further. Since he had no idea what he wanted to study there wasn't much point thinking about it right now. Maybe something to dwell on later. It wasn't like they couldn't afford to put him through college now, and the last of Drew's student loans had been paid off which Dawson was sure was a huge relief.
[Okay, good.] A line of tension immediately melted from Dawson's shoulders. [I'm not even sure I'll find another pack here. I went out yesterday but it looks like my old one moved on. Not that I'd have gone back to them anyway, but you know...] he gave a small, sad smile, [it would have been better than nothing?] Even though actually, nothing was definitely better than his old pack.
[Think about it] Drew said as a point so that Dawson didn't brush it off as nothing important and actually gave it some thought. [And if you need any help you know I'm here]
Drew frowned at the sad smile which crossed over Dawson's face and shook his head. [Never say never, Dawson. Los Angeles is full of supernaturals and I'm pretty sure that there's a lot of packs]
[I know, I know,] Dawson commented, shovelling food into his mouth once more. It was still hot, but that hardly bothered him. He watched his brother frown and lifted his shoulder. [I know, I guess after the last one I'm wary? I don't want to be...]
He kicked the island gently. [Isolated again. Besides, I have you.]
[That's understandable] Drew replied. [But don't close yourself off to opportunities because of what happened last time] That was kind of how Drew looked at life. One bad experience didn't mean that the next time something happened it was going to be the same.
He offered Dawson a comforting smile. [That's right, you do. And I'm not going anywhere]
Drew might have looked at the world that way, but Dawson wasn't quite as optimistic. His meeting with Elijah had gone better than expected, though the slight rumbling of another scent in the shop that he didn't recognise that was added to the layers was enough to set him ill at ease. He had said nothing at the time because it hadn't really clicked until afterwards.
He nodded, returning the smile with one of his own. [And you're stuck with me, sorry, bro.]
[Fate worse than death] Drew replied with a teasing smile that was accompanied by a wink. [So, how about we get a couple more things unpacked and maybe watch a movie, how does that sound?]
Dawson snorted and flicked a few grains of rice that had fallen onto the counter in his brother's direction. [Jerk] he signed but still nodded. [Sounds good. I wanna hear about your day.]
Drew gave a warm laugh in response to Dawson's show of flicking rice and calling him a Jerk before he tipped his head. [Come on, let's grab a seat. I'll fill you in]
Dawson just grinned, feeling that familiar swell of affection for his brother, his pack and snagged the bag that contained the rest of his take out before he was following - as he always did - Drew to catch up on his day.
He thought maybe, with time, they'd be okay and find their place here again. It would just take time. Thankfully, they had a lot of that.
