Who: Daniel Penbrook & Sebastian Sullivan
What: Catching up
When: 27th Sept
Where: Black Velvet
Rating: Low
Warnings: n/a
-After Daniel got Sebastian situated at Black Velvet, the younger vampire had to admit that it was rapidly becoming one of his favorite spots in the city. He liked exploring, for the most part, and didn’t come here every night - but as far as feeding went, it was most certainly an upscale experience. Perfect for someone like him, who preferred discretion and a specific amount of class to his meals, nothing he could simply grab off the streets. God, that was revolting. Give him a drink that would satisfy him, the porterhouse as opposed to the whopper.
The tone of Black Velvet was also more thankfully downplayed than your average city club or bar. Hemlines actually existed in this place, and the no-name DJ of the night wasn't intent on rattling patrons teeth loose by overkill with the bass. The bar was usually crowded with business suits and some less formal; the respectable dress code seemed to be a little less enforced on a weeknight. But Sebastian had to admit he wasn’t all that interested in the clientele. He came here to catch up with Daniel. Time with dear ol’ dad was always important.
He had a classic dry martini in hand (they made his favorite drink right at Black Velvet), down in the public mingling place - he hadn’t decided if he’d eat here, probably not though. He wasn’t a glutton. “Any developments I should know about?” he asked, referring to the work-Magisterium part of things, as the music melted into the haze of the lounge area - some jazzy number, much better than Rihanna’s ‘S&M’ or whatever.
There had been some developments but they were the sort that Daniel knew to play close to his chest. Some secrets were better kept that way. Less chance of things going awry that way especially with the “troubling interference” that he’d been informed about earlier that very evening, he had work to do it would seem, but thankfully it wouldn’t take him out of town.
“Well the Magisterium is somewhat concerned about Michael’s arrival in LA,” he did share as that part was true. “If only because my friend defies convention and flies in the face of everything they hold dear and true to their cold hearts.” It was no secret that Michael and the Magisterium didn’t see eye to eye and if anything they abided one another.
He sipped at his whiskey and loosened his tie so it sat slightly askew. “And you, Sebastian? How goes making friends?”
“Uh - “ Sebastian had to pull up his memories of Michael, and put that together with why the Magisterium would even give a fuck about him. Surely there was something ridiculous going on - since there always seemed to be - but nothing was on fire and Daniel would tell him if he needed to do anything specific or be worried (at least, he hoped his sire would) so otherwise? He didn’t prod. “Oh, right. Him. I think he’s old enough by now, they should be aware he’s not going to start an anti-Magisterium revolution.” You could hold differing viewpoints without causing problems - and Michael didn’t seem to, at least not ones that required swift intervention. “Shouldn’t they be more concerned about you defying convention? You’re in love with a witch,” he said with a touch of affectionate snark, gazing at Daniel over the rim of his glass.
But oh, right, him. And friends. “It’s good. I went on a date.”
Daniel would tell Sebastian if there was cause for concern or worry. As it was there wasn’t so he felt no need to share at this time. “A date?” He repeated, lifting an eyebrow. “That’s a new development.” Last he heard his Childe had very little desire to date or even engage in anything remotely romantic.
He tipped his head and gave Sebastian a considering look.
“So, how did it go and who is she?”
He assumed ‘she’ because that had been Sebastian’s preferred gender for a while now.
“It’s a he - I mean, he was a he. His name’s Roman,” Sebastian shared, mumbling into his glass all embarrassing-like and, damn it all, he could feel his face turning red. Or maybe it was psychosomatic - but let’s just say, if he was prone to being a blushing idiot, he’d be one right now. “It went...surprisingly well.”
God, did it ever. He still felt the ache of Roman in places that very few had been, and it was decidedly a good thing. “We’ll go out again, sometime soon.”
He hoped so, anyway. But they both seemed to have a great time, so why not?
Daniel’s eyebrows lifted when Sebastian admitted he had gone on a date with a man. Not that Daniel had any issues with that, obviously, but his Childe had never explored that area of his sexuality before.
“Well, I’m glad,” he affirmed with a nod. “It would seem that joining me in LA was exactly what you needed to broaden your horizons.”
With an affectionate smile he lifted his glass in a mock toast. “Here’s to that.”
Sebastian smirked, because yeah, broadening horizons. That was one way to refer to it. His brows knitted together in kind of a grimace, but a playful one, as he clinked his glass against Daniel’s.
“He’s a dragon,” Sebastian continued. “I’ve never really met one before, so it was interesting.” Especially since Roman seemed to hoard sad and lonely animals instead of glittering gemstones - well, not really hoard, but take in and care for because he was just that type of person. “He has a kid. One he adopted.”
A werewolf, apparently, but alas. Sworn enemies, bad blood (ha), a shaky truce, blah blah blah - he didn’t really care anyway. Werewolves didn’t necessarily bother him.
“Do you know what colour he is?” Daniel inquired, sipping at his drink. “I’ve met a few in my time and their colour definitely influences what they’re like.” It was a matter of curiosity for him more than anything else and also a protective streak as far as Sebastian was involved. Any colour other than a black one and Daniel would be happy.
Adopted child? That was interesting, particularly given that dragons weren’t known for being very… well, nurturing.
“I think that has to be the first time I’ve heard that.”
“Oh - “ Sebastian had to ponder that for a moment. “I think he’s a red dragon.” Or at least, he remembered Roman mentioning that, even if personally, Seb was unfamiliar with the different shades of dragon and what that said about them as people. “Why, does it matter?”
He’d have to ask Roman next time he saw him, about colors - because even if he was largely clueless about dragons, he wanted to learn more. “There’s a lot of firsts for me too, when it comes to him,” Sebastian snorted. That was for damn sure. “I...really like him.”
That was slightly embarrassing to spit out. Mostly because it wasn’t something he ever said. About anybody. Unless he was talking about Daniel, but that was different - he loved Daniel, in the way a son would love his father, but didn’t want to jump his bones.
“It does, matter, that is,” Daniel replied. “Each dragon is different depending on their colour and as long as he isn’t black then I’m even happier for you.” Though admittedly this Roman sounded like he might be a very different dragon entirely if he was adopting random children. Life was full of surprises.
He was aware of how difficult it must have been for Sebastian to admit aloud that he really liked this dragon especially as he did so very well at not getting close to anybody save Daniel of course, but he was his Sire after all.
“Are you two going to see one another again?”
Not a black dragon was a good thing? Interesting to know. Sebastian would also ask Roman about that - but either way, he was sure nothing about this particular dragon he had quite a thing for was standard or conventional anyway. Roman marched to the beat of his own drum, and that was why Sebastian liked him so much. One of the reasons, rather.
“Yes, I think so,” he nodded, feeling the heat in his face dissipate a little. He continued to sip his drink, maybe the alcohol helped. “I mean - you’re not going to do anything embarrassing and dad-like, are you?”
Such as run a background check, or give Roman the shovel talk. He really wouldn’t put it past Daniel about the background check though. His sire had a lot of...connections.
“Define what you consider embarrassing and dad-like,” Daniel challenged with a smirk before taking a slow considering sip of his drink. “Am I not allowed to be interested in this dragon that’s caught your eye? It’s a rare occurrence, Sebastian. I would be remiss in my duties as Sire if I didn’t at least look into him a little bit. Nothing obvious of course, I am very good at subtle.”
He was and would always be protective of his children and that extended to the potential partners in their lives, best to check them out and make sure they weren’t about to shatter his children. Sebastian especially. Intimacy and personal relationships were not something he just did because he felt like it.
Daniel wanted to make sure that he’d come out of this relatively unscathed.
“I know, you’re - yes, subtle,” Sebastian agreed in a wheeze, because he couldn’t believe this was actually happening. Better yet was Daniel saying that his childe actually was interested in someone in a romantic way, and referring to it as a rare occurrence.
Well. He wasn’t wrong, per se. Even Sebastian had been surprised how quickly he had fallen into Roman - usually he wasn’t the ‘fuck someone in the bathroom on the first date’ type. Nor was he fucking anyone in bathrooms at all.
He downed the rest of his drink. “I’m going to get another, do you want one?” he asked. “Then we can...talk about you.” Or something else. Anything else.
It wasn’t that Daniel was amused by this new development. More pleasantly surprised. Sebastian had always proclaimed that he would never fall foul of frivolous things such as feelings and attraction, but clearly this dragon had ticked whatever boxes needed to be ticked in order to get his Childe to open up.
How times had changed.
“Yes, please,” he affirmed with a nod of his head and further smile. “And I suppose we could talk about something other than your love life. Maybe.” He flashed Sebastian a grin and wink before he just smiled. He was pleased, definitely pleased.
