Who: Billy Crowley & Noell Pascal
What: Noell is definitely not getting into trouble
When: 19th March, evening
Where: Upper West Side, near the clubs and bars
Rating: PG-13, (swearing)
Most of the time, Noell could keep herself out of trouble. Or at least she could avoid getting caught. The problems came when people, usually idiot bigots, thought that they could outsmart a vampire. She didn't bother too much with the rhetoric that went around, the 'humans first' agenda that some people were pushing, but every now and then it was crammed in her face, and Noell had a bad habit of snapping at anything that was put in her face. Which was exactly what happened after she'd been leaving a club, playing up her vampire status for the meal she'd picked up. Certain 'friends' liked certain aspects, and while she didn't mind having to doll up, paint her lips red, wear the smokey make up and play an overdone role, there were limits. She'd already told her 'friend' to run along home and get some rest, since it would be at least a week before Noell would contemplate seeing her again, but she'd not had that luck when the police were called over the altercation. The fact that a silver fucking dagger was found on her would be attacker might work in her favour. Besides, she'd only clawed part of his arm and bit his hand, he wasn't dying, just acting like it. Noell was stuck sitting against a wall, while ambulances reacted like a massacre had happened, waiting for whoever was going to come over and accuse her of some great atrocity against humanity. She really hoped she wasn't going to have to kill anyone tonight, she was tired and stupid work wanted her in at 9am, like that was something she ever agreed to. Billy had been called to the scene after a silver weapon had been found on an assailant, and a vampire ‘aggressor’ had been involved in the altercation. Though the force was supposed to be neutral, Billy knew there were more than a few cops that had aligned themselves to the new political leanings and though it saddened him immensely he also wasn’t hugely surprised. After all, humans were nothing if not predictable and he’d been alive long enough to have seen a smaller version of this happen before. So when he turned up, the first thing he noticed was the sharp tang of blood and he took a breath, ran his tongue over his teeth to prevent himself from fanging out and just tugged on his collar, wandering past the blockade and the wailing man who was now saying that he didn’t want to be a vampire right to the woman sitting on the ground. He knew without having to ask that she was the vampire in question, partly because she was being given a bit of a wide berth and also because he could sense it. Sliding down next to her, between her and the officers who looked a little more at ease now Billy had arrived, he tipped his head to look at her, knees bent and forearms resting on them, hat hanging loosely between his fingers. “Rough night?” For a moment, she wondered if she should feel offended that they waited for the vampire officer to arrive before she was even really spoken to, while they'd all be clamouring for idiot human's input on things and she'd been left to wait around. At least no one dared to try and put her in cuffs, they'd have lost an arm. "It's certainly not going how I thought it might." She could keep her temper at bay though, stamp it down and make herself react cool and calm, answer questions without letting her fangs out, be clear and concise. At least until someone questioned her events, called her something she wasn't, argued the fact. Then it might get messy. "They all worried I'll tap a vein, waiting for someone I'm less likely to pounce?" Although, she managed a smirk as she turned her head, hoping that at least having another vampire here they'd understand that it wasn't exactly a huge deal -she'd bit his hand, she hadn't poisoned him and her nails hadn't scratched deep, he wasn't going to turn -god she'd kill herself if she'd turned that loser- and she'd only reacted because he'd purposely brought a supernatural weapon to an argument. It wasn't her fault he'd mixed up werewolves and vampires. Although just the notion of that was ridiculous too -silver, for a vampire. Even Hollywood knew it was stakes. “Certainly looks that way,” Billy said with a humourless chuckle, glancing up at the officers who were now content to let Billy deal with ‘his people’ so they could go back to crowd control and trying to calm the wailing man who was crying about how he was going to press charges and make sure the bitch burned. Billy’s eyes flashed and he got to his feet, excusing himself for a second from the vampire’s side to walk over to the man. His fingers twisted in the shirt and he pulled him in close, hissing a warning about appropriate behaviour and how if anything he’ll make sure she got off on self defence because he was the one caught carrying a weapon specifically required in order to carry out a hate crime. He could smell the silver when he walked onto the crime scene, not that it hurt vampires, but the fact was, the guy was out to commit a hate crime. And hate crimes, right now, were still against the law. Leaving the man blanched and sheepish to be bundled into the back of an ambulance, Billy walked back over and offered her a hand to stand up. “You wanna tell me what happened?” He asked, “Other than the guy being swiftly taken to Grace deserved every scratch and drop of blood lost?” She was oddly grateful that a cop, a cop, a breed of occupation she tended to despise on principal, got in there with the threats first. If anything it made her a little less confrontational, she'd reign in the snark, possibly drop a bit of her defensiveness. Usually, Noell avoided these types of things. Sure, it was because she didn't leave witnesses or victims to complain, but still, this whole fiasco was likely to draw too much attention her way -and that was a problem in and of itself, given her career at the moment relied on people actually being willing to work with her. But, true to her kind, she didn't take shit lying down. Giving her side of things, with the assurance that she was most likely justified, would hopefully lead to going home soon. She may not need to avoid sunlight, but she didn't love being around for dawn. "I was out, with a friend," she didn't think she needed to elaborate on that, "we were leaving and this guys shows up, mouthin' off about humans first and how we're an abomination." Things she'd heard before and didn't really bother her, "Next thing I know there's a dagger in my face and I lashed out." Sure she knew silver wasn't going to kill her, but it might hurt like a motherfucker if he got a good stab in. "I didn't bite or scratch deep, it was just a warning." "Yeah, it doesn't look like you did too much damage, but he'll have a nice scar as a reminder not to cross a vampire," Billy said, rather unapologetically because the guy was clearly a grade A arsehole and Billy had absolutely zero sympathy for people like him. This 'humans first' rhetoric was as dangerous as it was boring to hear. Though Billy understood where they were coming from to some extent, they were going about it very poorly to try and prove their point, alienating people that would probably want to listen to them if they calmed down and actually made a good, calm point rather than shouting and screaming about stuff that didn't exist. He nodded, "You- uh, do you have a sunlight charm?" he asked, well aware that the night was long since waning and the sun would be up soon. "I'll need to take a formal statement. Were there any other witnesses? And did he get you with the dagger?" It should've been obvious, really. Humans shouldn't really cross vampires in general, never mind overweight bigots who didn't even get the lore right and went after the wrong species. Although she doubted he'd really come out with an agenda, just wanted to pick a fight. And even with Noell not particularly liking many wolves, she didn't think one would've deserved being riled into a fight and then stabbed with something specifically to poison them. "You'd think that would be common sense, since we come with built in weapons." Seriously, she could've really fucked him up with a well placed swipe of her hand, split open his jugular, let him just bleed and twitch until he was dry. But no, she showed restraint. "I do, thanks." At least they wouldn't need to move it indoors and leave her there, or worse, go to the sewers. Ugh, LA's sewer system was deplorable. "I can give you my partner for the night's number, but she'll be unavailable for a few hours while she sleeps off our fun, um, the bouncer was out front so I think she'd have seen most of it. Asshole's friends, but I doubt they'll paint me in a pretty light." She raised her hand to show a thinning line of red running from her wrist along the side of her hand to her pinky, "It wasn't deep and it's already healing, but he swiped and I raised a hand for defence." Because duh, who wouldn't. Billy nodded, glad at least that if necessary they didn't have to rush through their conversation. He didn't want to miss something that might support them ensuring that the jerk behind this got away with being allowed to try and press charges. "If you could, that'd be great. I can speak to the guy's friends, too, see if we can't just get the truth rather than some trumped up-" he paused, chuckling to himself at the unintentional pun, "-no pun intended - story they're undoubtedly concocting as we speak." And it was likely true; they were standing together, talking in hushed voices. If Billy wanted to, he could have tilted his head and listened in, but honestly he was more concerned about making sure that the vampire in front of him was okay. He lifted his own hand, gently touched her wrist and asked her to keep her hand still, taking out his phone and snapping a picture of the injury. "It'll be gone soon," he said, in defense of taking the picture, "but it shows that he was armed, and that he managed to wound you badly enough that it didn't immediately heal." From another pocket, he pulled out a notepad and held it out to her, blank page and pen presented. "Can you put your... friend's details, and also yours? I'm not gonna arrest you right now but I'll have to ask you not to leave town, you know the drill?" Her head shook a little at the unintended pun, just like it would when Leon would make some pun from his little conspiracy theories, but followed the request to keep her hand still while he documented the injury that would, in less than an hour, be nothing but perfectly smooth, pale skin once again. She had contemplated aiding the healing before, even offering help his, but fuck if she was going to while he was spouting off his rhetoric about purity and humanity -like she hadn't been a human once upon a time, she remembered how dull and pathetic being a human had been, she might not have had a great start as a vampire, but she wouldn't change it for the world. Taking the pen and pad, writing down her own contact information before jotting in Selene's as well, she'd need to shoot a text at her snack to give her the heads up, but Selene was a regular companion, they went out at least twice a month, she could rely on back up there. "Darn, I was planning a trip to Mexico this week too. Shucks, just ruining my vacation plans." She didn't exactly 'know the drill', but she'd seen enough TV to catch it. "I guess this is where those cop show reruns will pay off for me, huh?" Billy snorted, taking the pad back and checking that the numbers at least looked legitimate. "Yeah, you probably wanna look at avoiding heading to Mexico at least until the guy gets outta the hospital." He smiled a little and belatedly realised he hadn't introduced himself. Noell, at least, had put her name down. "I'm Billy, by the way, Billy Crowley." He held out his hand, "Shoulda probably done that first, huh? Is there anything else that's important you think I need to know about this bullshit? Other than that the other guy was in the wrong - which I knew already?" Not that she was planning on leaving or anything, but she snapped her fingers in an 'aw shucks' motion. But she knew at least that it wasn't going to be a witch hunt -so to speak. She'd remember his name at least, rather than just asking for the 'vampire detective', it could be Crowley that she looked for. "Gets lost in the procedure probably." Likely didn't help that the incident was literally left for him to arrive. "He was saying some of that humans first shit, I dunno if there's ever records of those assholes at their events or whatever." She doubted it, no one really took names at that stuff, "But other than what you already know," she shrugged lightly, "that's about it." Billy nodded, making a mental note to add 'xenophobic bigot' to the file that he'd have to write up for the evening's events. He stuck the notepad back inside his jacket and clicked his pen before putting that away, too. "Might need to hit you up to come in to make an official statement if you gotta leave, but it might be better to get it over and done with now. You looking to press charges?" Because in Billy's eyes, regardless of what his colleagues might say, Noell was the one who had acted in self defence here. And he'd pick that hill to die on over and over again when it came to the supernaturals in LA that were being persecuted by virtue of nothing else but hatred. There was something telling her not to press charges, to sort it out herself in a more permanent fashion. But now that there were cops involved, even if she got Leon to end this sad sacks life while she alibied herself, she'd still face scrutiny. Not that pressing charges wouldn't bring all sorts of focus on her anyway, and with the life she and Leon led, that might be dangerous all the same. "As much as I want to stick it to this asshole and make sure he doesn't get away with this crap," which he shouldn't, because even if she wasn't a fan of wolves most of the time, if that fuckface had stabbed one of the pups with that dagger it would've had a hell of a serious effect on them. "I should probably check with my brother before making that decision." Leon who was, routinely, in the shit with some of these people. Billy nodded, rummaging about in his pocket for his card. He held it out to her between two fingers. "Okay, if you change your mind and want to press an assault charge, give me a call? He's not gonna be out of the hospital for a couple of days anyway so it'll be easy enough to find him." Trailing her fingers along the edge of the card, Noell nodded slightly. She'd love to put this guy in his place (which was the dirt), but maybe dragging him through court would be satisfying too. She'd just need to check in with Leon about it first. "Thanks, I will." And if that didn't work, well, she could set up an alibi and have someone else maul the shit stain. |
