Devon had figured she’d have another knife at the ready. He had hoped to have gotten her weapon away from her and would have liked to have fought with her in more of a hand to hand combat, but taking away one of her toys seemed a smart idea at the time. Half expecting her to come after him through the bathroom window, he had tensed up. There was no doubt about it, she was a hunter and she had set it all up.
Settling himself in order to be alert, he listened for her break in to his room. What he heard instead was the check in clerk talking on his phone a few feet away from his door. Fuck. Well, it had been better to have been safe than sorry. Within moments he heard the police sirens from the distance. Devon silently cursed himself again. It was one thing to have reinforcement, he needed it since he was sans pack and he hadn’t crossed with a hunter. He had no information on her other than what he had known about her in the few weeks he had taken his deliveries from her flower shop. He remembered the knife and quickly checked to see the bathroom clear. No sign of a break in. He grabbed hold of the knife and crossed the room to the dresser and quietly wrapped a t shirt around the blade. He then grabbed his tool bag full of odds and ends and took out some heavy duty masking tape. Lifting his shirt with one hand, he carefully and tightly wound the masking tape around his body, securing the cloaked knife just a few inches under his armpit. He carefully smoothed his shirt over the bandaged weapon and shrugged into his hoodie, but left it open. Glancing at the aerosol can of wolfsbane, he tossed it with his construction tools. The sirens were now near the parking lot and he’d have to give a statement. She’d still be out there watching. Fine. He was about perform his ass off.
Waiting until the police officers knocked on the door, he cautiously looked into the peephole. Two officers and the clerk off to the side were there. Rolling up the sleeves of his hoodie, he drew back the dresser and opened the door to let all three men in. “Oh thank god, officers.” “We got a call about a disturbance and assault?” “Yea, I…..I can’t believe she did that,” Devon started, raking his fingers through his hair. The officers walked into the room, noting the bedframe against the window and dresser off to the side. “Can you tell us what’s going on here?” “Yea, yea, um, I came home from work, I’m a groundskeeper, I just did a job out in oakfield. And I get booby trapped here. Some thing hits my face, there’s all these levers.” He pointed to the hinged and twine. “Next thing I know I see her in the parking lot and she’s looking fucking crazy. She’s still out there!” One of the officers nodded off to the other to take a walk through around the motel in search of the woman. “And then what happened? Why’s the bedframe here?” “She’s reaching into her jacket and looking like she has a weapon and I panicked. I’ve seen her hit, sir. She can break right through the window.” “You knew her?” “Yea, we dated for a bit, you know how it is,” he smirked slyly, “I wasn’t exclusive and I guess she just went ballistic. I didn’t mean to lead her on or anything, honest, but I was just looking for some fun and then she just started stalking me.” The officer flipped open his notepad and fished out a pencil from his trouser pockets. “Name?” “I’m Devon, sir, Devon Close.” “Her name?” “Elaine.” “Last name?” Devon grinned slyly, “Didn’t really get much time to get her last name, if you get my drift.” Devon swore he saw the officer grin the tiniest bit. “Look, I’ll pay my rent and any damages, I’m really sorry, I’m just trying to make an honest living here, but I don’t feel safe.” The officer sighed. “We’ll take you to the station to fill out a report.” “Thank you, Sir, mind if I pack up quickly, I’ve gotta make arrangments and stay with my buddy in town. I don’t want her setting fire to any of my stuff while I’m gone.” The officer nodded and had a word with the clerk. While they waited outside, Devon stuffed a duffle bag of his clothes and toiletries as well as grabbing the bag of tools and walked out with his things and scanned the lot for any sign of the hunter.
