Author's/Artist's notes: Thanks to my accountant and Uncle C for their valuable help in cleaning this story up. Also, thanks to the mods for allowing me to have a few extra days to finish. The basic premises is that these are the missing Harry/Padma scenes from the Half Blood Prince, which replaces the original Harry/Ginny romance in the series. I’m not sure if this is what you were looking for but I hope you still enjoy it.
Why is it whenever those two start going at it, I’m stuck in the middle? I am so sick of trying to referee their stupid little squabbles. I’ve got my own problems. Between trying to put a Quidditch team together, school work and Dumbledore’s private lessons, I barely have any time for myself.
Then let’s not forget Slughorn and his blasted club. Yeah, I really want to be another part of his collection. The only reason he thinks I’m so good at potions is because of the book. I wish I could figure out who the Half Blood Prince really is?
Gazing down at the mug of Butterbeer in front of him, Harry frowned slightly. He knew he should probably go back to the castle and check on Hermione, but he just didn’t have the motivation. He still wasn’t sure what Ron and Hermione had fought about.
He remembered Hermione making a comment about Ron taking a fancy to Rosmerta. But then again, who hasn’t? Ron had stuck his foot in his mouth yet again by making fun of Hermione. Then the two just went off on each other. Hermione eventually stormed off, trying not to cry in front of everyone, and headed back to the castle. Ron on the other hand, sat quietly for moment, before spying Lavender outside and taking off after her.
I wonder how much longer they'll go at it? Is this how’s it going to be for the rest of our lives? Or are they just going to end up killing each other?
Just as Harry took another drink from his Butterbeer, he was startled as someone suddenly sat back beside him. Coughing as he choked on the Butterbeer, he instinctively reached for his wand. But looking over, Harry was surprised to see one of the Patil twins sitting close by. What the devil is Par…No, it’s Padma. Padma?
“Most people announce their arrival, Padma,” he told her, his voice a little hoarse. He slowly took a deep breath, partially because he needed air, but also to try and calm his nerves down.
Padma smirked at him, impressed that he was able to tell which one she was without having to wear Ravenclaw blue. “Sorry about that,” she murmured, but by the amusement in her voice, he wasn’t sure she meant it. “I had to move quickly. You were scowling so much I thought you were going to start hexing people. I figured you could do with someone to talk to.” Here Padma paused as her grin widened. “But, more importantly, the Hippogriffs have smelled the blood.”
“What?” he asked dumbfounded.
“Look around, Harry,” she told him, and grinned as she watched him peer about. “You don’t see it, do you?” When Harry shook his head, she leaned in closer. “Every witch in this room has her eye on you, especially now that Ron and Hermione have cleared out.” She tried hard to suppress the giggle as she saw Harry’s eyes go wide in surprise and concern.
“So you thought you’d strike first?” he asked her skeptically. He hated all the attention that his fame brought him, especially from what he considered the 'giggling fangirls'.
Padma just shrugged. “Hardly. I already know what kind of date you are,” she replied. “I was just trying to be nice. If you’d rather I leave, I’ll gladly leave you to the mercy of Vane over there.”
Harry grimaced as he shivered slightly at the thought of that. “Fine, stay.”
“I thought you’d see it my way. So what's eating at you?”
Shrugging, Harry took another sip of Butterbeer. “Too much to do and not enough time to do it in.”
“We’re all like that. But I guess not everyone has the fate of the Wizarding World on their shoulders, either.”
“Something like that,” he muttered faintly.
Realizing that Harry wasn’t going to just open up to her, she searched for something for them to talk about. “How’s Quidditch?” She really wasn’t a fan of the game, but knew it was probably the easiest thing for them to discuss.
“All right I guess, considering I’m basically rebuilding the team. Still trying to get them in sync and play like a team though.” Pausing, he looked over at her and a small smirk eventually formed. “Trying to get a leg up on the competition?”
Padma rolled her eyes at that suggestion. “Please Harry, if you don’t easily beat Cho, then I will have sorely over-estimated your skills. I’m all for house unity, but we're known for our intelligence, not our skill on the pitch.”
“Rooting against your own house?” he asked rhetorically with a chuckle. Ravenclaw should be a good match. Hufflepuff has always struggled to put together a good side. It’s those blockheads from Slytherin I’m worried about. The Chasers are alright, and Crabble and Goyle are dangerous even without their clubs. Then there's Draco. The thought of Draco sent his mind spinning back around all the suspicions he had of the little ferret being a newly marked Death Eater.
“You’re doing it again,” Padma’s voice whispered in his ear.
Pulling out of his thoughts, Harry shivered again as he felt Padma’s breath against his skin. Inhaling, he realized he could smell her perfume; she was close enough. “Doing what?” he finally managed to ask. In his opinion, a wizard would have to be dead to not be attracted to either of the Patil twins, but it was different than that. Padma was certainly different from the other girls. She’s a lot easier to talk to, that’s for sure.
“You’re brooding,” she answered with a soft giggle. “You kind of just stare off into space, ignoring everything around you. I’ve seen you do it in class, especially during the Tournament a few years ago. It’s kind of interesting really, but I can see why most people think you’re a bit stuck up.”
“So you’ve been watching me, eh?”
Padma pulled back a little, trying to hide the faint blush that crept across her cheeks. “I’m a Ravenclaw, I automatically observe my surroundings. You’d be surprised what you discover by simply watching people.”
The clock in the corner chimed four in the corner, interrupting their conversation. “I guess I should be getting back to the castle.” Harry drained the last of his drink and slowly rose off the bench.
“Would you mind some company?” Padma asked, to which Harry just shrugged.
As Padma bent forward to retrieve her coat that she had draped over the table when she sat down, Harry found he had an excellent view down the top of her sweater. While not being able to see much, the sweater’s neckline plunged just enough to where he could see part of her breast and a dark purple bra. Finding himself unable to look away, his mouth went dry as his mind began wandering again.
“Ready to go?” Padma asked as she stood up and slipped her wool cap over her head.
Thankfully for Harry, he thought she was too busy adjusting her hair to have noticed him staring like an idiot. “Yeah.”
But as he turned away and headed towards the door, Padma grinned because she had noticed him staring. Normally, she would’ve been upset about someone staring at her like some kind of object. But at the moment, she wasn’t sure if she was more embarrassed or flattered about his attention, which caught her off guard.
Outside, the pair quietly fell in step as the wind and the freezing drizzle whipped about them. As they reached the main path to the castle, they both could hear snippets of the conversation of the pair a few yards ahead of them. Wonder what Katie is bringing back? Harry wondered as he heard his teammate tell her friend to basically mind her own business.
After about another hundred yards or so of walking along the path a piercing screaming echoed around them and both Harry and Padma’s heads snapped upward against the bitter wind. Instinctively, Harry tugged Padma behind him and crouched into a defensive position as he drew his wand from within his jacket.
“What is it?” Padma asked breathlessly as she also drew her wand.
“Katie!” the voice screamed again. This time Harry recognized the voice as the friend that Katie had been walking with.
Katie! Breaking off in a mad dash, Harry charged forward, fearing for his friend and teammate's safety.
Startled, but not put off, Padma quickly chased after him. Looking up, she could just see the outline of someone spinning around a few feet up in the air. “Merlin,” she whispered under her breath. What dark magic is this?
