Ginny had been really, really hoping that Ron would say something that would put to rest Hermione's doubts about his feelings for her. He didn't even have to say it outright; Hermione was clever enough to understand the meaning beyond the words. But even knowing Ron's affections for her friend, even Ginny couldn't find something encouraging in what he actually said.
"Ron," she hissed under her breath, "Stop."
She turned to Hermione. "Is that what you want us to do? Leave you alone halfway across the world to face the parents you left behind? Leave you to deal with their questions and their worry by yourself? Do you want us to abandon you here without knowing when we'll ever see you again? Maybe that is what you want! Maybe then you can tell yourself how awful we are and how we don't care about you and how you have no one to rely on but yourself! If that's the case, then I'm sorry, we really do know better than you, because you're wrong."
