A walking PSA. That probably described Spencer pretty well. He was always spouting out information to whomever would listen just so long as they were on the subject, or he somehow found a segue into it. And it wasn't so much that he was looking for opportunities to talk about what he knew, it just flowed from his brain into his mouth and he couldn't really stop it from coming out.
He smiled when she admitted that she didn't know it, feeling somewhat helpful for the first time since he arrived. Had he known of the slew of questions that were now flooding Kenzi's mind, however, he wouldn't have felt so great. He didn't want to scare her, but sometimes the knowledge of the current statistics did that to people. It made them blatantly aware of the what ifs in the world, and made it seem more possible. His brows rose at her question.
"Well, you're partially correct. The rabies virus is transmitted from an infected source, usually an animal, to a human. In many of the cases people do not realize that they've contracted the rabies virus until they exhibit the symptoms, but by then it's too late. Human-to-human transmission is theoretically possible, but there haven't been any documented cases of such. Like an STD as you mentioned. There were cases of it being transmitted, however, through cornea and major organ transplant." When Spencer got on a roll it was very hard for him to stop, but he realized he might have worried Kenzi some.
"You really shouldn't worry about it, though. I mean the odds of contracting the rabies virus is one in one-half percent of the bat population, which subsequently is the animal most likely to transmit the rabies virus to humans. Approximately 35% of raccoon have the virus, but there's only ever been one human death that resulted from a raccoon bite. The people in the animal care community must get the rabies vaccine for obvious reasons, as well as park rangers and anyone working for the federal wildlife service. Any animal handler, or even laboratory workers that deal with the rabies virus. It should also be noted that people traveling internationally to areas that has animals should get it as well."
He paused, and rested his hand on the back of his head. He knew he had been rambling, and once again he gave Kenzi a sheepish grin. "Anyway, you uh, you mentioned something about a fae race? How does that all work?"
