Talking was one of the best things Spencer did, and one of the worst. Decidedly when he was talking about the fields of study that he knew (and there were quite a lot) he tended to ramble, stating fact after fact about what and what wasn't correct. When it came to casual talk... well, he needed a little more help with that. He had gotten a lot better since he joined the BAU, but it was still a struggle. He was still the geeky little brother that everyone liked to pick on every now and then, and he had just gotten used to it.
Being transported to Marrowood was jarring, for certain, but if there was anything the FBI taught its recruits was to stay calm in the face of danger. And while danger was not imminent at that moment, he knew that a calm frame of mind was for the best. His reaction wasn't normal by any means, but Spencer was not a normal guy. Not at all, and he stopped trying a long time ago to be "normal."
"Oh uh, you know I didn't used to," he told her honestly. "I mean when I first joined the BAU I didn't, but in my line of work when you do it all the time it sort of becomes a habit." He shrugged a little, and grinned at her sheepishly. Meeting new people never went well for Spencer, poor guy. He stumbled over his words and mannerisms, and it was hard for him to find comfort initially. It was easy for him though to talk about cases, even his own. His eyes brightened at her suggestion, and he nodded. "Definitely," he said. "I've got tons of them. Not of my own, but of cases I worked on and how we caught the UnSub, and we could go over the specific motivations and stressors. Yeah, there's a lot we can talk about."
As much as Spencer talked he thought that Kenzi was the same. Her flare for stories made them seem much more interesting than his, and he couldn't help but be drawn in. Plus, how often did you hear the words "mad scientist" and "demons" in the same sentence? You just didn't, and that was fascinating to him. Things that were supposedly illogical existed in this world, and he had to know more about it. Or he'd go crazy, a legitimate break with reality wouldn't be far away if Spencer couldn't apply logic somewhere to the situation.
"Crazy magic juju works," he said to Kenzi. "I'm actually only slightly versed in the occult. I'm hoping to change that at the library in town. I hear it has a lot of information there."
