The day had finally arrived when the Luteces would finally see the fruits of their labor. It had been several months since they were able to build their Lutece Device, and several more months afterward to get it working in any manner. Travel within the towns was much easier with it to be sure; and their mobile devices had on more than one occasion saved them from unsavory circumstances. It was a success to be sure, but not in the way the twins had hoped for their device would still be lacking when it came to producing a viable tear to a reality that was not Marrowood. But that would change. Oh yes, the Luteces were certain of it. Today would be the day that everyone would remember - the day when they would all be able to leave Marrowood. With Loki and Tommy's help, the Luteces were certain they had discovered the link between magic and science. That link would allow them to harness Loki's power and use it to enhance their tear device, allowing them to finally break through all of Marrowood's shields and to be free of this wretched world. There was nothing the twins wanted more, Rosalind especially, to just escape this place and go back to a world that she was used to. She needed the familiarity of Columbia so she could continue her work into the mysteries of the universe. She could not do that here no matter how hard she and Robert worked. It was frustrating for such accomplished physicists to be left rediscovering "rules" for a world that did not follow the rules that existed in all the other worlds and universes they had visited. But they persevered through it all, even against the residents that did not agree with their research. They wanted to do this for themselves, and for the greater good of the town. Rosalind smiled to herself at the thought that the residents would have to thank her and Robert for saving them. Praise and recognition for their genius was all Robert and Rosalind had ever wanted. "Tommy," Rosalind said with a smile. It became apparent to her that their young assistant was always more willing to do something when she smiled for him, something that she found slightly odd. The nuances of human emotion were still a mystery to her, but she liked to believe that she was getting better. "Could you please change the dielectric in the capacitor? Rather than use glass I think we shall try ceramic this time around. I believe that frequency, instead of voltage, will be the key to success this time." Robert was working on a special "magic" capacitor that would allow them to capture, and store, Loki's magical energy to be use toward opening the tear. Since applying magic directly did not work Robert had theorized that perhaps like DC voltage, magic had spikes and ripples that would interrupt the flow. With a capacitor they would be able to absorb the peaks while filling in the valleys to create an even stream of magic. "I believe Loki and I are ready when you are," Robert said to his sister. Rosalind nodded and took a deep breath. "Well, this is a momentous occasion, gentlemen. I do believe that with these adjustments we will be able to open a tear to another world." Rosalind's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, as she looked to Loki and Tommy. "Don't forget, Tommy. We will need you to create as high of a frequency as you can with your powers. That, combined with Loki's magic, is the key." Science and magic, Rosalind thought to herself. She never believed in magic until she came to Marrowood, but now she could see how the two were very similar. And when she was sure that everyone was ready she flipped the switch to turn on the device. It hummed deeply, like a thousand purring tigers all at once. She could feel the hum in her bones, and she knew that after this moment things would never be the same. |
